Teaching Teens About Personal Revelation

Most teens (and many adults) struggle with understanding personal revelation. It’s one of those tricky topics that can actually make us feel inadequate and disconnected from our Father in Heaven, rather than closer. This teaching tip focuses on helping teens understand what the Holy Ghost prompts us to do/become…rather than just how it feels.

You can find the links to the scriptures I mention below:

Galatians 5:22 – The Fruit of the Spirit…

D&C 11:12 – Trust in that Spirit which leadeth to do good…

Mosiah 3:19 – For the natural man is an enemy to God…

Moroni 7:16 – Everything which inviteth to do good and to persuade you to believe…

The quote about fleeting thought is from President Eyring’s April 2016 Conference Address, Trust in That Spirit Which Leadeth to Do Good. It’s a beautiful address and you should hear every word of it! Here’s the link to the full talk. The quote I refer to is listed below.

“The Lord said, “And now, verily, verily, I say unto thee, put your trust in that Spirit which leadeth to do good—yea, to do justly, to walk humbly, to judge righteously; and this is my Spirit” (D&C 11:12).

You may have received that blessing tonight. For instance, a name or a face of someone in need may have come to your mind during this meeting. It could have been only a fleeting thought, but because of what you heard tonight, you will pray about it, trusting that God will lead you to do the good He wants for them. As such prayers become a pattern in your life, you and others will be changed for the better.”

MeckMom’s Teaching Tips: How to Use the New Doctrinal Mastery Seminary Program

If you haven’t already heard, there is a new program rolling out in Seminary classes this fall. Scripture Mastery memorization is being replaced with a great system called Doctrinal Mastery.

Doctrinal Mastery focuses on two major outcomes:
1. Learning and applying divine principles for acquiring spiritual knowledge
2. Mastering the doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the scripture passages in which that doctrine is taught.

There are 10 key areas of study. I wanted my kids (even my little kids) to be able to find each of them easily in their scriptures so I created a new series of scripture stickers to help them locate all 100 verses.

I’m a big fan of this new program. Here’s a quick video about how I’ve decided to help my kids use and learn these key scriptures.

If you’re anxious to get these stickers in your kids scriptures, you’ll also want to watch this short video about how to print and place them.

You can find the cool sticker paper and Doctrinal Mastery printables on MeckMom.com or in the MeckMom Etsy shop. All of the printables have been coordinated to the color guidelines set out by the popular LDS Seminary Teachers Facebook Group.

Whether you use them for Scripture Study or just to prep your kids for those critical 4 years of high school, I hope you find a way to put them to use in your Family. Have a great week!

MeckMom’s Teaching Tips: Finding answers to tough questions

Fielding unexpected questions in class is one of the hardest parts of being a teacher. Rather than frantically try to answer them yourself, I find it’s really helpful to teach your students find solutions on their own. This simple video will direct you to a few great LDS resources to help you handle the toughest LDS questions.

MeckMom’s Teaching Tip: Using Scriptures in Class

Every LDS lesson has dozens of scripture references. Figuring out how to incorporate them into your plan without losing momentum can be a bit tricky. Here are a two of my favorite tips for helping your students use and navigate their scriptures in class.

MeckMom’s Teaching Tip: FREE Gospel Art Kit Scripture Stickers

The scriptures are always the best tool to teach kids the gospel – but they can be intimidating for kids to use. When my kids were little I really wanted to help them connect with their scriptures (without spending a ton) so I created these cool, transparent scripture stickers based on the Gospel Art Kit found on LDS.org.

You can add them to your kids scriptures by following these four easy steps – I made it Pinterest friendly so go ahead, pin your heart out! 🙂

This year, I completely revamped the original stickers I created back in 2008. I included tons of new pictures from each of the four books of scripture (140 stickers total) and added all the the references and page numbers right on the sheet. I also formatted them to fit perfectly on my favorite peel-n-stick sticker paper so you could skip all the cropping time. They’re so much easier to use now. Here’s a pic of me putting the new set on my son’s scrips while I was waiting to pickup kids in my car. Multi-tasking moms unite. 😉
