MeckMom’s Teaching Tips: Object Lesson for Faith and Eternal Perspective

Life is hard. When adversity hits we often feel insufficient and hopeless. When we are in the trenches of struggle, there’s nothing more soothing than catching a glimpse of yourself as our Father in Heaven sees you.

This simple object lesson uses a bag of wheat to teach the value of keeping an eternal perspective. It’s a great option for seminary, youth and adult classes. I call it the parable of the wheat.

Face to Face with President Eyring and Elder Holland

unspecified
Did you know that President Henry B. Eyring and Elder Jeffrey R. Holland will answer questions from youth around the world during a live Face to Face event?

WHEN: Saturday, March 4th, 2017 at 11:00 am MST

WHERE: This event is broadcasted live from the Joseph Smith’s Farm in Palmyra, New York where a 14-year-old Joseph Smith, Jr. experienced the First Vision following a heartfelt prayer. A very fitting location given this year’s mutual theme, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.” (James 1:5)

“Most youth of the Church across the world will never have the chance to visit Palmyra, New York, in person, but I hope that participating in this event will help some of them feel as if they are there,” said President Eyring. “I hope they will feel the spirit of this quiet, holy place and perhaps gain a stronger testimony of what took place here on a spring day in 1820.”

HOW (can I watch it)?: Here are a few options: LDS Youth Instagram livestream, LDS Youth Facebook page, YouTube, & LDS.org (on homepage).

BONUS: Ten minutes before the event, an exclusive world premier video of the First Vision will be shown called, “Ask of God.”  The video will be available to download and share following the event.

WHAT can I do to prepare?

1. Submit your questions to this link.  You are invited to consider what questions you would like to ask and share them on face2face.lds.org or on other social media channels using #LDSface2face.
2. Follow the LDS Youth Instagram page which will livestream the event (they will also have exclusive behind the scenes of the Church History Sites all week).
3. Read the
article, 5 Ways to Prepare for Face to Face.

All youth and their friends, leaders, and parents are invited to participate in this live, interactive question and answer session.

January Come Follow Me Printable Lesson Helps for Young Women

Hi friends,
This month’s theme for the Come Follow Me curriculum is The Godhead.  I LOVE teaching and learning about these things.  There are SO many simple truths that come from these lessons!  There have been countless times in my life where the knowledge that “I am a daughter of my Heavenly Father, who loves me” has brought me so much comfort and peace, and I know our Young Women desperately need this knowledge as well.

January Come Follow Me Young Women I LOVE all of these kits, and they are now available in a Bundled Pack! All FIVE lessons bundled into a discounted price!  You can find the Bundled Pack here.
Here are a few highlights from each of the printable lesson kits for this month.

January Come Follow Me – Why is Jesus Christ important in my life? – FREE printable

Hi friends,
I wanted to share with you this BEAUTIFUL printable that I have created for the January Come Follow Me lesson, “Why is Jesus Christ important in my life?”. I made this printable last year, but decided to update it will the testimonies from 2016 October General Conference.  And decided to give it to all of you for FREE! Download it here.
Out of all of the printables that I have created for the Come Follow Me curriculum, this printable had the strongest spiritual impact on me personally.  It has been so humbling to read the simple but profound testimonies of the leaders of His church.  It has brought a sense of purpose, direction and peace in my life as I have read and re-read these testimonies, and I hope you and the young women you teach can have a similar experience.

ASK – Acquire Spiritual Knowledge – 2017 LDS Mutual Theme

2017 LDS Mutual Theme

Hi friends,
I wanted to share with you this AWESOME printable kit that can help with introducing the 2017 LDS Mutual theme.  The theme this year comes from James 1:5, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

I believe this theme is TRULY so inspired! There are so many different aspects of this profound and simple message.  As I thought about what to design to go along with this theme, the quote from Sister Julie B. Beck kept coming to mind, “The ability to qualify for, receive, and act on personal revelation is the single most important skill that can be acquired in this life.” I absolutely LOVE this quote, and think that it ties in PERFECTLY with the theme for this year. I decided to create this kit based on this quote, tying in the acronym, “ASK = Acquire Spiritual Knowledge,” and using a light bulb to represent knowledge.

The miracle of technology has absolutely changed the way we ask questions, and how we receive answers.  Most of the time, if we have a question, the answer can be easily found at our fingertips via the internet.  But spiritual questions cannot be asked or found answered the same manner.  These questions have to be asked in faith, and received by personal revelation.

You can use the theme of “ASK – Acquire Spiritual Knowledge” in SO many ways.  I like the idea of introducing the theme at the beginning of the year, and then enforcing the theme throughout the year with special firesides or 5th Sunday Lessons.  This way, you can focus on and highlight different aspects of Acquiring Spiritual Knowledge. (Prayer, Faith, Scripture Study, Temple Attendance, journaling to name a few). I created a few printables quotes that coordinate perfectly and can be used throughout the year as handouts, or can be used as decoration in your YW rooms.

“Pray, He is there. Speak, He is listening.” – I LOVE this line from “A Child’s Prayer” and  has been a great source of comfort during so many different times in my life.  I think this quote PERFECTLY embodies what it means to Ask of God, Ask in Faith.

“Believe, Nothing Wavering” – This quote comes from the second verse of the theme for the year, and it has profound meaning in so few words.

“Fourth Floor, Last Door” –  I think this was my FAVORITE quote from last General Conference!  It comes from Elder Uchtdorf’s talk from Women’s Session.  This quote hit home for me, and knew that I needed to have this quote included in this kit.

Each of us has either had very personal experiences with these quotes, or know someone who does.  Our youth NEED to hear these experiences.  Where appropriate, SHARE them!  Invite others to share them with your youth!  I believe the more that our youth hear DIFFERENT ways that others have Acquired Spritual Knowledge and subsequently how they have received personal revelation, the more they will be able to recognize how the spirit speaks to them in their own lives.

Along with the quotes, this kit comes with LOADS of additional coordinating printables to help enforce the theme including a Banner, YW Values Posters, YW Theme Poster, Gift Tags, Refreshment Toppers, Food Tent Labels, Treat Bag Toppers and SO MUCH MORE!  You can find this printable kit here.

I have LOVED creating this kit for you, and hope that it helps inspire you to ASK – Acquire Spiritual Knowledge.

Melanie B
