Forsake All and Seek Ye the Kingdom of God (Rachael, Leah and Jacob)
This painting is by Megan Rieker.
“And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Beth-el, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother. Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments: And let us arise, and go up to Beth-el; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went. And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem. “Genesis chapter 35:1-4
Rachael and Leah give us a beautiful example to us of the importance of ‘putting away’ the things of this world and cleansing ourselves! They obeyed Jacob in faith, knowing that they could not worship God while clinging to idols. In the latter days, we are often distracted from pursuing our eternal goals by the worldly things that surround us. Modern-day idols such as attire, possessions and indulgences can lead us off the true path.
Jesus told the Nephites, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (3 Ne 13:21)
