My children love to give movie passes to their teachers. During the summer teachers tend to have extra time but not a lot of extra money. I've also given a gift certificate to a local bakery that is near the school - they can get a pie or some other nice dessert on their way home on one of those last days. We also try to get something personal for the teacher, based on what they've told their students they like. For example, one son's teacher loves horses, and we found some pretty note cards with different horse scenes on them. Another teacher loves diet Pepsi and chocolate, and her 1st graders know it! So we got her a 6 pack and a couple bags of the better chocolate. My children enjoy being a "detective" and trying to pick up on what their teacher loves. Another thing we've done is put together a small breakfast basket for their first summer morning -- pancake and muffin mix, flavored syrup, a bottle of juice, etc. (Shared by Lauren L.)
Every teacher I've ever known loves to read. A good teacher gift would be either a book that you can contribute to their classroom or a book on a subject they might enjoy reading. Another idea is to donate something to a teacher that they can use in their classroom. I always check with the teacher before hand to make sure they could use it. I've donated abandoned birdnests to biology and kindergarten teachers, a large rock with various crystal formations to an elementary school library, (they lend it to classes that discussed it) and an old camera to my son's photography teacher. You could also use any of the neighbor gift ideas and substitute teacher for neighbor. On the Christmas page of sugardoodle.net, there are some gift ideas that could easily be changed to teacher gifts. Instead of "popcorn ball - hoping you have a ball this season" you could change it to "having a ball this summer". Another one I've done is "Pop, Pop, Fizz, Fizz, oh what a good teacher you iz" and give microwave popcorn and pop. (Shared by Barb Bennett)
In the eight years that I taught school, prior to the birth of my twins, I saw many cute and thoughtful end of the year gifts roll in. However, what meant the very most were the genuine written notes of gratitude from both the parents and the students. If you have been impressed by the educators in your children’s lives, as I have been by my twins’ teachers this year, may I suggest that you write a letter to their principal, expressing what specifically you valued about that individual. Don’t forget to forward a copy to the teacher. You can’t imagine how much impact that simple act of praise can have for well deserving teachers! (Shared by Erin Linton)
Hershey kiss roses - Give her a dozen. For primary activity we used skewer sticks and did push them into the chocolate - p.s. carmel drips we found out. We used double stick tape. For red cellophane we used dollar store red collophane tissue and the way it was folded gave us perfect cutting guides. We cut our own leaves out of construction paper. We inserted a dozen roses into a plain party favor bag (dollar store) upside down and tied it all off with a ribbon and poem glued to red paper for a border. (Shared by Lacey Lopez)
Cake Ball Pops - We made the cake ball pops ~ just in a circle shape, not the Cupcake Pops ~ faster for us. Red velvet ones in the chocolate bark are YUMMY! (Shared by Melinda)
My child has a male teacher and I gave a flashlight with a tag that said "Thanks for lighting the way." Also, one year I had all the students fill out a form that had different questions about the year and what they liked and the fuuny things that happened that year. They had about 10 questions they had to fill out. Then I went to the copy store they put the plastic binding on and the teacher loved it. The PTA made boards with the saying in vinyl letters, "You may only be one person, but to one person you are everything." (Anonymous)
Some of the things we have done in the past are to make a special craft or even make a basket or bag filled with items the teachers could use next year for their class. For example: Tissue, hand sanitizer, hand soap, markers, crayons, colored pencils, glue, etc. They always seem to like to receive these items. (Shared by Laura)
I put together in a small galvanized bucket from the $2.50 section at Target some snack foods for the teacher. I figured she will be spending a few extra days at school once the children are gone and will want some snacks. (Shared by Shay Jenkinson)
Cookbook - We’ve sent a note home to parents asking for several Family Favorite Recipes and a picture of their child. In the next week we’ll send a Questionnaire home…it will ask the kids how to make something they like to eat (12 eggs, 100 cups of sugar, some brown water, and bake it in a pan at 10 degrees for 6 hours….hahahaha). It will also ask them questions about the school year; and I’ll ask those interested to have their kids draw a picture to illustrate the cookbook. (Shared by Melissa Dillon)
Here's what we made for my daughters teacher this year. We wanted to give her a Target gift card but do it in a creative way. (Shared by Liz Carroll)

(Shared by Taunya Ferguson) My children and I are making candy bar posters for their teachers. The last two years we've given their teachers an awesome book from Usborne Books ~ which I sell (www.ubah.com/p2506). This year we wanted to do something different. We are hoping for a candybar sale this week, so the poster isn't done yet, but this is what it will say:
Dear (teacher's name),
I just wanted to TAKE 5 minutes and tell you what a SPECIAL teacher you have been. I couldn't have found a better teacher if I searched all across the MILKY WAY! You deserve a paycheck worth 100 GRAND so you can go on a shopping SPREE on 5TH AVENUE this summer. It was such a JOY to be in your class. I had MOUNDS of fun. Thanks for helping me SKOR as your student. I hope this card made you SNICKER! You are the best BAR NONE!!
From, (child's name) (___) grade ROCKS because of you!! The candy bars are:
TAKE 5 HERSHEY SPECIAL DARK MILKY WAY 100 GRAND SPREES CANDY 5TH AVENUE ALMOND JOY MOUNDS SKOR SNICKERS BAR NONE POP ROCKS
(Shared by Allison Drake) I had these sayings already saved on my computer so I thought I would share. Hope they can help someone out. Here are some door decoration ideas:
~ We think you’re the “grapest” teacher of the bunch. (use purple balloons) ~ You’re “tops” with us (pics. of students on tops) ~ Thanks for teaching our “juniors” that you were “mint” to be a teacher. (Jr. Mints) ~ You’re one in a million (gumballs in a machine) ~ Without our teacher we would go “nuts”!! ~ Rising high in ___ grade (lg. hotair balloon w/ pic. of students inside.) ~ Let’s party with Mrs. ____ (party bags each labeled with day of week and have a prize/gift cert. in ea.) Teachers Appreciation/Teacher Sayings: In the past, I have attached a note to each item and put them in a basket as a gift. That way the teacher gets some supplies for the following year. * We think you’re NOTEworthy! Have a stuPENdous day! (Tie a notepad & pen to this note) * We give you high marks! (Tie to markers) * You really measure up! I am so glad that you are my teacher!! (Tie to ruler & fruit by the foot) * You have been a Marvelous & Magnificent teacher!! (Tie to M&M’s) * There isn’t a teacher “butter” than you! (Tie to something with peanut butter) * Thanks for going the “Extra” mile with our kids this year! (Tie to pack of Extra gum) * You’re one in a “melon”! (Tie to pack of watermelon flavored candy) * There’s no way to STICK it, you’re a great teacher! (Tie to glue sticks or tape)
Also, I saw this next idea on Good Things Utah, and made one for each of my childrens teachers. I had them write their thank you notes and they gave a candy bar with the note on the same day. It reads: A teacher… takes a hand Opens a mind Touches a heart Shapes the future.
