My love for Jesus Christ grows when I pray
Lisa writes, "This sharing time combines the LDS Sharing Time Outline and some ideas taken from Mormon Share."
Attention Activity by Mormon Share: Hold up a cell phone and ask if anyone has ever used one. Ask them to name places where they've used a cell phone. Answers may include in a car, outside, in the house, even on a boat.
Now ask the class why they have used a cell phone. Answers may include I needed information, when I needed help, when I may be lost and not know directions, or when I just want to talk to someone.
Briefly relate a few instances of when you use your own cell phone.
Ask the students, "Can you just call any number to reach my cell phone?" (No, you must know the correct phone number.)
Tell the students, "Did you know God wants us to call Him? He even gives us a way to call him -- prayer -- and His number -- J-E-S-U-S."
We can't just call any number and reach God. Jesus said in John 14:6, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father but by me." There is no other way to call on God except through Jesus Christ, His Son. When we pray, we must pray in the name of Jesus Christ.
We can use our cell phone (prayer) to call on Heavenly Father anytime and anywhere. Read Alma 34: 17-27.
We can have a phone, we can know someone's number, but until we choose to actually dial the number, we'll never reach them. It's our choice to call on God; we must act upon our choice by praying. Heavenly Father is there anytime, anywhere and for anyone. Close with D&C 88:63.
Reading and Discussion Scriptures (Sharing Time Outline):
Divide the children into small groups.
Each group read/discuss the following scriptures, looking for what the Savior teaches about prayer: 3 Nephi 18:19–20; Doctrine and Covenants 19:28, 38; 88:63–64. Emphasize that the Savior teaches us to pray to Heavenly Father in His name and that this helps us feel closer to Him.
Song: "A Child’s Prayer". Talk to the children about how your love for the Lord grows when you pray.
Parts of Prayer: On the board make a chart with four columns.
1. Write "Our Heavenly Father".
2. Write "Thank Him for blessings".
3. Write "Ask Him for blessings".
4. Write "In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen".
Ask the children to list in their class groups several blessings they are thankful for. Then ask each group to name one blessing they are thankful for as you write that blessing in column 2. Next ask the children to discuss in their class groups blessings they could ask Heavenly Father for, and write their answers in column 3. Review the parts of prayer.
ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING (coloring a picture): Make a copy for each child of the illustration on page 19 of the nursery manual, Behold Your Little Ones. Let the children color the illustration and take it home to share with their families.
