IDENTIFY THE DOCTRINE (memorizing a scripture): Help the children memorize the following sentence from Alma 13:28: "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and call on his holy name, and watch and pray continually."  Discuss what the scripture teaches about how and when we should pray.

ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING (reading scriptures and hearing a scripture story): Help the children understand that we can pray to Heavenly Father silently in our hearts anytime, anywhere and that we should thank Him for our blessings and ask Him for help.  Write the following scripture references on the board:

 3 Nephi 18:19
 3 Nephi 19:6-8
 3 Nephi 18:15

Also write the words how and when on the board.  Invite the children to look up each scripture and discuss what it teaches us about how or when we should pray.  Tell about Alma and Amulek teaching the Zoramites how to pray (see Alma 31, 34:17-27; see also Primary 4, Lesson 21).  You may want to ask a few children to act out the story as you tell it.

ENCOURAGE APPLICATION (sharing feelings and singing songs): Invite several children to share how they feel when they pray.  Ask the children to suggest some Primary songs that teach about prayer.  Sing a few of the songs, and invite the children to suggest simple actions to replace one or two of the words in each song.  For example, instead of singing the words "pray" or "prayer", they could fold their arms.

For Jr. Primary I'm going to have the sing "Head shoulders knees and toes". As we sing it though I'm going to have them bow there head, fold there arms, kneel down, close our eyes, listen with our ears, and close or speak with our mouths. Next I'm going to share president Monsons talk from the second Sunday session. About praying and when and for what($5 bill story). Then I'm going to explain that we need to pray for a little boy in our primary. I'll wrapp it up with a the scriptures in the outline.

I love this talk, but I'll save it for week 3/4. I think it fits perfectly!!

There is a great story in the September 2011 Friend entitled "A great Saturday" that deals with this subject.

Also, here is a link to thoughts from Elder Nelson and a coloring activity: http://lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?hideNav=1& locale=0& sourceId=a9436c667a6af110VgnVCM100000176f620a____& vgnextoid=21bc9fbee98db010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD

Here are two more good stories from the Friend:

This link is a good reference to the story about Alma, Amulek, & the Zoramites. If you're terrible at retelling & summarizing stories like I am, it may be helpful! It's from the February 1992 Friend. There is also a picture in the Primary 4 lesson manual (listed above) that goes along with the story. Visual aids are so helpful with the kids.

If you can't get the link below to work, try quoting Young. That gave me the full link to copy and paste - then it worked great.

Here is what I'm doing for music time. I think the kids will have fun with it http://thebusycoconut.com/2011/10/the-scriptures- teach-me-how-and-when-to-pray/

A game board with squares that alternate the words WHEN and HOW. Split the primary into two teams. A child rolls a very large dice made out of cardboard and poster board for the team. He or she moves piece the roll of dice. If the piece lands on a HOW square, they must tell one HOW of how we should pray. If they cannot, there is a HOW and WHEN pocket they can draw from. These have scripture references they can look up and then tell one HOW or WHEN of prayer (As required by the game). Using the cards costs them one space. So if they roll a 5, they only get to move 4 spaces that turn. In essence, they move back one square.

After typing in one long e-mail I won't do it again--it was tedious & didn't work. Is there an easier way?
