Shayleen writes, "I wanted to share a picture of the blocks I made for our Primary children’s birthdays this 2010 year.  They are just cut 2x4’s.  I painted them, used Mod Podge to glue the picture of Christ on them (pass along card) and did a few coats of glossy Mod Podge over the picture also.  We decided to do the block idea because our children LOVED the “I am a child of God” blocks (with the vinyl lettering) that we did for them two years ago."

That is what our ward is doing too.... we are using the Article of Faith cards, with Jesus and the Children. I'm still debating adding this years theme or leaving them with just the picture? Yours looks great!

You could always put the theme on the back if you wanted to! Or the year, or "Happy Birthday from Primary" in more modge podge even!

what a cute idea! Wish our primary wasn't so big.

What a cute idea! I wonder if this is the same Shayleen Lunt who is married to Aaron (Justin's brother). Justin & I went on your first date with you to the hockey game! :) Small world!

    yes, it's me...Shayleen Lunt...married to Aaron ;)
I am making about 60 of these. They go quick when you have counselors paint them first ;)
If I wasn't in survival mode, I would definitely have put the theme and year on the back. Oh well.

Great idea-thanks so much for posting it. Got pass along cards from the missionaries yesterday, bought the 2x4 at Home Depot tonight. We're going to put the 2010 theme, as well as the year, on the back of the block. :-)

I am so frustrated. I have to make 150 birthday gifts for 150 primary kids. This is such a cute idea but still not cheap enough for me. Any ideas let me know.

    Mindy,
We did something similar but for our spotlight gifts. We used 1/8" MDF board cut to 3 1/2, x 5 1/2 size. We only made 60, but got them done super fast with four of us. We just painted them all black, used this same picutre but cut the white frame around it off, then used regular mod podge. We drilled two holes at the top and added sheer ribbon and hemp for the boys from the $ store. I think I spent about $24 and we could have purchased one extra board and made 150 for maybe $5.00 more. I think I posted them on my blog if you would like to look...probably posted early December at www.theoregonducks.blogspot.com

    Good luck!

You really can't get much cheaper. I only spent $8 for 60 of these. The mod podge was an additional $8 because I didn't use a coupon (use a Michael's 40% coupon though) or make your own Mod Podge with Elmer's glue and water...cheap and easy.
150 is a lot! I could end up resorting to a candy bar with that many kids

I think this is great. We are only a small little branch with 22 children in primary. I am thinking of combining this with the magnetic bookmarks. I will use the same picture for both and personalize them by getting the children's favorite colors for the block color and background for the bookmark. The children will get the block out of the birthday box and take them to the branch pres who will give them the bookmark that matches the block. (this will combine four really great ideas I have found on this site for birthdays). Thanks sugardoodle and all the contributors you are life (and time) savers.

I love this and am going to combine it with three other ideas posted on sugardoodle as we are a small branch with only 22 children in primary. I am going to personalize the blocks by finding out the children's favorite colors. I will use the blocks for the children to pull out of the birthday present box and they will take them to the Branch Pres who will give them the matching magnetic bookmark. Thanks to everyone who contributes to this site, you are all my life savers.
