LEADERSHIP HELPS:

Newly called leaders - The best resource for scouting is the "Scouting" handbook.  I didn't know anything about scouting when I was called - but my secretary is also a cub scout leader and she has been a great help. Last month our stake Primary leadership meeting focused on scouting. We invited all ward Primary presidencies (excluding secretaries) all cub leaders, cub masters, and 11 year old scout leaders. We had a member of our stake presidency give the stake's expectations of what should be accomplished in cubs and 11 yr. old scouts. Then a cub leader spoke about "10 Things I Wish My Primary President Knew About Cub Scouting..." We had our high councilor over Primary speak about how important the cub master is. We had a ward Primary president tell about the importance of going to Roundtable - the monthly scout meeting. Then we ended with an 11 year old scout leader telling how important it is to have a strong program in their wards for these young boys so they will continue on in scouts and become strong deacons. I just remembered - we also had my counselor with the responsibility of "Faith in God" talk about the correlation of the award with the cub scout and 11 yr. old scout program. It was a very informative meeting.....So I think the best way to learn is from people in your ward's that know what's going on and learn from them. (Idea by Jeri)

What are the 10 things you wish your primary pres knew about Scouts? I've been thinking about it-- but if you've got this anywhere, can you please post it?

  • Anonymous

Does anyone have any great ideas on getting scouts to complete their Faith in God also?

It's so easy for the girls, but a lot of extra work for boys! Most of our boys are graduating from Primary without earning their Faith in God award! I'm a new Primary Pres. and would love suggestions!

  • Anonymous

Our Stake Presidency has asked the Stake Primary to do a Mini Camp Philmont. I would love to have the information on "10 Things You Wish Your Primary President Knew About Scouts." Is there any way I an get this? Thanks

  • Anonymous

We were having the same problem with our boys not earning their Faith in God Award. On the first week of every month we have a Faith in God activity for the boys. This replaces their scouts for the week. We have someone who is called as the "Faith in God for Boys teacher". This is all part of our cub scouts. It has been very successful.

  • Anonymous

Earning the Faith in God award has become a cinch in our ward since someone divided the program up and assigned portions out to each den. So many of them correlate with the Scouting program that they can easily include it in one of their monthly den meetings. And by the time they get to Webelos they are that much closer to earning their rank as well by completing their Religious knot requirements.

    For Jeri,
How can I get a copy of the talk you referred to: "10 Things You Wish Your Primary President Knew About Scouts."

    Thanks bunches,

Got a pack mtg coming up and my mom is in-charge of the wolfs and we need help coming up with jokes or riddles the theme is rain gutter regatta where can we get a list of them.

Me too! If you are able to get a copy of "The ten things you wish your primary president knew about Scouts." I would surely appreciate it!!! (Having just been released as a Primary President and now a bear cub leader.) I'm SOOOO new to scouts that every little bit of information I can get will be so appreciated!Funny...I've served in EVERY other position possible to women in the church...EXCEPT scouts...and now here I am. Feeling kinda overwhelmed!

  • Anonymous

I also would like a copy of the 10 things you wish your primary leader knew about scouts. Our pres is new and so is the den mom and pack leader (and me too so I might not even have the right titles) and we could use all the help we can get with the program.
As far as the Faith in God book goes, one ward I was in, I was also in the Primary presidency and we had a night once a month where we got all of the 8+ kids together at one of the presidency's homes for some fun and to work on/check off two of those goals and of course we had treats. With the Primary leadership doing two goals once a month most everyone got things done and then even the less active families could let their children come and get things accomplished. I thought this was something the primary pres was supposed to do- but perhaps it was not in the manual.
    Thanks for all your ideas.

I would like to jump on the bandwagon...could I please get a copy of the 10 things you wish your Primary Pres knew about Scouts, too? Thank you!

There is a great list someone has put together that shows which cub scout requirements correlate with which Faith in God. Many of them can be accomplished simultaneously. I think you can find it through the BSA site or lds.org ??? It has been a lifesaver for us.

I found a site that has the Faith in God listed along side correlating cub scout requirements! Woo hoo! :) http://pack152.net/FaithInGodPrimary/ FaithinGodPrimary.htm Hope that helps!

Take a look at the requirements for the new "manners" belt loop and pin. The character connection for respect also falls into a lot of the ideas from the "fun for the family" book, which could be incorporated into a den meeting.

I sent Melanie my year curriculum and I used the list you refered to. I made sure that the den meetings (we only have den meeting twice a month) will match up to the requirements. So many of the faith in god activities correlate that you don't need to have a separate faith in god activity day. Email me at shelleyrnash at gmail dot com and I'll be happy to send you my wolf, bear, and webelos den meeting plans that incorporate the religious knot emblem, faith in god, and the appropriate rank for each den. I also have a nicer looking copy of the faith in god requirements that match up to cub scout requirements which I've sent to melanie as well.

Need LOTS of ideas for Arrow of Light Ceremonies. We have 2-3 boys earn this award every month. I want to make it fun and special for them every month.

  • Dana

Try contacting your district's OA (Order of the Arrow) leader. He can bring with him some other OA members and do an awesome program for you. Good luck.

Speaking as a Stk Primary President...attending Roundtable is always a great place to get help and support. Also, you need to talk to her and ask her for more training. She needs to spell out exactly what she expects from you.

One of the requirements for cubs to get their Faith in God knot patch is to help plan a primary quarterly activity. Now that the new handbook doesn't have quarterly activities, do we know if the church has substituted anything else? I was going to talk to our primary and have my boys do something different for the primary, but didn't know if there was some official word yet.

  • Jennilynn

I had this same question as well, and found the answer on the church website (http://lds.org/service/serving-in-the-church/ primary/for-parents-and-primary-leaders?lang=eng& query=primary+quarterly+activities). A different requirement has been subsituted since the quarterly activities have been discontinued.

My Suggestion - Fine Motor, Gross Motor. In other words, have sitting and listening - 10 minutes, then moving and talking - 10 minutes. Before and during sitting/listening remind them that their chance is coming. Hope that helps.

:-) the new "Scouting Handbook for Church Units in the United States" is now available ONLINE ONLY. All Primary presidents, Counselors over Cub Scouts, and any other registered Scout Leaders in the LDS Church should be familiar with it. If your Bishopric or Cub Scout or Boy Scout committees or leaders aren't aware of this, please let them know.
Here is the direct link: http://lds.org/bc/content/shared/content/english/ pdf/scouting-handbook-2011.pdf?lang=eng

    Answer:
The church has also updated the the Faith in God Booklet to omit that requirement and to add the religous square knot to the requirement above that one that talks about reading the 12th article of faith. Go to lds.org, serving in the church, primary, Faith in God, and then finally adapting Faith in God.....you will get your answers... there are chages for the girls Faith in God booklet also.. hopefully new versions of the Faith In God Booklet will be printed soon..... Hope this helps.

Does anybody have a sample scouting budget for LDS scouts? I need to put together a budget but I am not sure what exactly I need to budget for. I know basic things like the Pinewood Derby and the Blue and Gold but I am not sure how much to budget for den meetings, pack meetings and awards. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Macay  - Pinewood Derby Thank You Card

It takes a lot of help to pull off a pinewood derby. We had a brother in our ward put in a lot of time helping the cubs with their cars and with the track so we wanted to give him a special thanks. We had each boy color a printout of a derby car. Then we attached lifesavers for the wheels. The cars were then attached to a folded poster board. It was a giant thank you from all the boys.

Here is a link to pictures and more instructions. http://www.macayatplay.com/2013/01/a-wheelie-big- thank-you-card.html
