Step 1

Buy the blocks. You can use whatever size you like.

Step 2

Drill a hole in the side. I am not an expert on this and someone else drilled them. You have to have the right type of drill head to create a large enough circular hole but not to break the glass (and it is thick so not to break the drill). I think someone called it a diamond head or something. (you can drill the hole in the back but with it in the side you have a two sided block to work with)
Just a hint that when you buy the diamond head drill bit, buy the biggest one (It's $12.00 at Lowes) That way you can fit the strand of lights in there.  I have read that if you don't use this type of bit (diamond bit) the glass will be weak and likely shatter about a week or two after drilling. You could call a glass shop and ask them about it.

Step 3

Insert lights. I have heard of the one light like a Christmas bulb/nightlight or small Christmas twinkle lights. We have used white but I found an example with colored lights.

Step 4

Print off your pictures. We printed them off on to regular white copier paper from the computer. I think if you do it on photo paper the light won't shine through.

Step 5

Decoupage. If I remember right you just buy the decoupage stuff that you mix with water. You can find it at a craft store or at Wal-mart. We did both sides of the block.

Step 6

Let dry and then insert your lights into the side.

Step 7

Plug in and enjoy. I believe that was all there was to it but I wasn't in charge just got to enjoy the activity and the beautiful results. I found some links so hopefully you will see what the end result is. I don't know if they did theirs this way but they look similar. Oh or you can paint on the blocks too. I noticed while searching some have accessories on top and some they just tie or glue ribbons and accessories on them.

P.S. We bought the small string of lights (I think about 15 white lights). And the girls put on pictures of their favorite temple, Christ and the Young Women, Christ in the Red Robe, etc. They turn out beautiful. Some of the girls made them double sided. So they can turn it to the side they want. One side had something church oriented, the other had one of their favorite pictures. Very fun.
