Corn Maze Activity

Several years ago, I did this with all the Young Women. We entered the maze about 45 minutes before dark and the girls spent the next 45 min trying to find their way through the maze. The theme of the corn maze that year was a pirate theme, so they had toy necklaces, rings, gold coins, etc. throughout the maze that you were welcome to take. The girls (to my surprise) were very interested in these OTC (Oriental Trading Company) treasures. I was the last in the group (I had received permission from the owners prior to do this) and I tied a white heavy duty kite string to the entrance, then I unrolled the string as I found my way through the maze. Finally all of the girls finished the maze and I had instructed them to go to a central meeting point, once I arrived, I sent my counselors back into the maze, and I spoke to the girls about how challenging the maze was and how easily they were distracted by the worldly treasures, but if they would but follow this string (the iron rod) that even though it was now completely dark out and they would never be able to find their way alone, if they put their trust in Heavenly Father and followed his path that they would be able to find their way through the maze of LIFE. My counselors were inside the maze at crucial turns telling the girls that I had made a mistake and that the other way was the right way, and then the other one said, here take this shortcut and it will take you back faster, it's ok if you just cheat a little. Well the girls finished the maze this time in less than 5 minutes with a lesson that they all loved and still remember. After, we went back to the church for donuts and cocoa. We're going to have them do the maze without a map then were going to have them do it with a map and then tie it into how the scriptures are our roadmap and many of us without the map for the map for the maze got lost or stuck… were doing this as a joint activity with the Young Men.  The Maze is for older kids.  I've been told its really hard. Life is a Maze (Author Unknown)

When going through the maze of life
many choices you will make.
Be sure to think what you've been taught
and be careful which turn you take.

Happiness will come when choosing right
and you'll easily find your way
But when at a fork in the road you choose wrong
confusion and sadness will stay.

Remember who you are and where you're from
and never give up on your goal.
The evil one wants to see you fail
and his presence will take it's toll.

The prize at the end is worth the work
life eternal with those you love.
Heavenly Father has made it possible
to return to him above.

Follow the savior's example
he showed us all the way
think of your time in this maze
when making your choices each day.
