Back to school kick off!

This list is simply ideas to get you started on a back-to-school activity.  I have listed
several activities and ideas below so just choose SOME of the activities that would
benefit your girls. (If you end up making a list of websites or other things as listed in
this page, please
e-mail them to me so I can post it for others to use...thanks!)

Possible Invitation Ideas

  • report card style

  • homework assignment style (your first assignment of the school year is to come
to mutual this week and have a great time)

  • large red apple, yellow school bus, or #2 pencil cutouts

  • buy inexpensive notebooks or note pads and write invitation on cover or front page

  • tape a fun pencil to invitation

 Make Book Covers

Check out Family Fun for instructions on how to make them.  They give ideas
 to use
old movie posters (ask at your local video store), fabric (use tape to
hold the folds in place), old road map, wrapping paper, newspaper comics,
brown or colored paper or heavy tinfoil
.

 Breakfast and Morning Strategies

Give ideas for healthy & delicious breakfasts, plus tips on conquering normal
morning chaos. You could maybe give each girl some 3 x 5 cards and ask her to
print out (however many girls you have in your group) her favorite quick and
easy breakfast recipe.  Each girl then swaps 3 x 5 cards and has several new
breakfast ideas.

Bathroom Totes:  (Click on link at left to view example)  You could probably
find something similar to this at your  local dollar store.  Give each girl a plastic
tote and have them decorate it.  Have them put their name on it and tell them
to put the things they'll need each morning into it -- brush, curling iron, deodorant,
hair clips, toothbrush/paste, makeup, hairspray, rubber bands for braces, etc. It
makes using the bathroom each morning quick and easy (especially if shared
with other siblings).

 Self Esteem

Talk about what self-esteem is and how they can improve theirs and as well
as help their friends.

Construct a time capsule

Using paper towel cardboard tubes and felt, decorate a mini
time capsule! You could ask the girls to bring a current picture
with them or use a digital camera, snap photos at your activity
and print them out (if an option).

Do you have extra pictures from girls camp or recent activity?
What a perfect way to use them.  Have the girls write down on a piece of paper what
they liked best about this summer and what they are looking forward to this school
year. Have them list some of their goals, favorite foods and movies....anything else
distinguishing themselves.  You could have them fill out a questionnaire (write up
questions and they fill in the blanks), have them write their testimony.  Insert every-
thing into the cardboard tube. Lay two pieces of felt end to end and glue the ends
together, overlapping them slightly.  Roll the tube up in the felt, gluing in place.
Decorate with glue, glitter, and/or puffy fabric paints. Tie the ends and set aside to
dry. Give them to the girls at the end of the school year to see how much they've grown.

Mini lesson on Integrity and Honesty

Teenagers today have such high standards set for them (especially young women).
It is not easy for most to always do well in school.  It takes a lot of studying and
work.  Explain how important it is to be honest and virtuous.  Have a five minutes
lesson and/or object lesson on integrity and/or honesty.  Here is a WONDERFUL
talk by David Bednar entitled "
Be Honest".

  Fun and different Hair Styles

You could search the web for some fun and different hair styles and print them out in a little
booklet for them to take home.  There are fun things you can do...even with short hair.   Key
ingredients- Quick and easy!  Here is a fun craft they could do at home or you could do
together:
Knitting Needles.

  Homework Helps

Make a list of helpful websites that could assist them with different school subjects.  You
could ask each of the girls before hand what (if any) websites they use and make a list that way.

  Back to School Kits

  Possible Refreshments

Bus Cake

Sack Lunch - Have a paper sack lunch with one or more of the following items as
refreshments.  Don't forget to write their name on the front and fold the top over...hee, hee!)

  • peanut butter & jelly sandwiches

  • string cheese

  • pudding or applesauce cup

  • grapes

  • baby carrots

  • chocolate chip cookie

  • juice box
