Discussion Questions

I teach the laurel class and with lesson 5 and 6 I have been thinking about a lot of things that go into creating a home environment that I wasn't fully prepared for. I decided to create a list of questions to generate discussion for my young women. Obviously I don't think we will go through all of these, but I think it would be a good launching pad and I am hoping the young women will go home and see areas that they need to develop further. I was really impressed with the story at the end of lesson 6 where the young woman came home from college and told her mom that she was proud her mother had adequately prepared her for life on her own. This is my attempt at getting the young women to think about issues that they will be faced with.

Do you have a checking account? Savings account? A debit card? Do you know how
to balance a check book? Do you know how to use an ATM?

How much do you anticipate spending monthly on groceries? Rent? Gas? Bill?
Entertainment?

Do you know how to use the bus system?

Do you know how to wisely self medicate for a cold? Do you know what medications shouldn’t be mixed?

Can you fix a variety of meals? Do you have a cookbook of tried and true recipes?

Do you do your own dishes? Do you do your families without being asked?

How do you fix a clogged sink? An overflowing toilet?

Do you know how to do laundry? Iron?

Do you know you can’t mix ammonia and bleach?

Are you able to balance your time?

Do you have your own tool kit? Can you use the tools in it?

Do you fulfill your church callings?

Are you responsible at turning in your assignments and fulfilling your commitments?

Do you know where the control panel is in your house and how to use it? The fire
extinguisher?

Do you have a weekly chore? Would you do it without an allowance?

How would you clean a carpet stain? A ring around the toilet? Mildew? The fridge? The oven?

Do you understand how to use a credit card? Interest rates? Minimum payments?

What would you do with a roommate who doesn’t clean up after herself?

Do you know basic car care? How to pump your own gas?

Do you know basic first aid?

Do you know the basic food pyramid and do you follow it in your meal preparation?

How often should you wash sheets and towels? Clean the bathroom? Clean the kitchen sink?
