You may have your own bedroom or you may share. Close your eyes
and imagine your bedroom at home, just as it looks right now. As I ask these
questions, just answer them in your mind.
What is the general condition of your room? What pictures are on the walls?
Are there knick-knacks laying around? How about the closet? Open the door. Can
you easily find what you need in there? Or, after opening it, do you have to put
your shoulder to the door and push to close it?
Just what does your room say about the person that occupies it? Does it reveal
your interests? Do you see things that show you enjoy sports, music, art, dance,
etc.? How about reading material? Are there magazines, school books, novels, and
scriptures in your room?
Your room is one place that definitely shows your skills in organizing and
cleaning. Does your room need a little help? Open your eyes. Do you agree that
someone could learn a lot about your outside interests as well as your inner
thoughts? The things and feelings you choose to surround yourself with reflect
your personal thoughts and feelings. They will have an effect on what you think
about and how you feel. You cannot be indifferent about anything that promotes a
strong feeling!
Share the following story.
There was a young girl named Camille who admired a certain boy and wanted to
date him. Looking at him from afar, he appeared to be an ideal boy. A girl's
choice dance seemed a perfect time to get to know him better.
She and all the girls in her group decided on clever ways to invite the boys.
She made an invitation to be put beside his bed for him to find that night as he
retired. She went to his home and explained her needs and asked for permission
from his mother to leave the invitation in his room.
As she opened the door, she detected a faint odor of gym shoes. Her eyes widened
as she got a complete look. His mother warned her so she shouldn't have been
surprised, but she was. Her room wasn't always ready for company either, she
told herself, so she shouldn't judge.
As she bent down by the bed to leave her invitation, she saw some magazines.
She thought she was open-minded, but these magazines made her do a double take.
Embarrassed, she looked around to get her eyes off the books and noticed a
couple of posters. These were on the verge of being pornographic. She was
confused and embarrassed.
In those brief minutes her admiration for him plummeted. She realized besides
the mess he lived with, the things he kept close to him in his room were the
things often on his mind.
She knew she wouldn't be comfortable with him on a date. What could she do now?
All she could think of was to grab a piece of paper and jot a quick note about
coming by to see him. She clutched her invitation and made a hasty retreat.
If someone, whose admiration you would like, came into your room, what
impression would they leave with?
