(Idea by Amie Holland) For a little handout - I bought
little tiny bottles of Purell hand sanitizer (6 for $3.99) and stuck one to a
3x5 index card using scrapbooking adhesive. I hand wrote this little poem on
each card...
When giving service,
You might get dirty.
Wipe hands clean,
Of germs in a hurry.

I have given this lesson twice to two different
groups of girls. I like to take balloons and put the 11 ways to prevent disease
on a little piece of paper inside. The balloon representing the body, the helium
representing the spirit. They pop the balloons one by one and we discuss the
paper inside. I also like to make wash cloth bunnies and attach a bar of
soap to it with ribbon. I am also a nurse and I have made a poster discussing
the " Chain of Disease" and how we can interrupt different cycles of how disease
is spread by the 11 points discussed in the lesson. (Credit Unknown)
1.. Clean the house regularly, especially places where disease-causing
microorganisms could live, such as warm, moist, dark, and sticky areas.
2.. Protect food by keeping it properly covered. Where possible, refrigerate
perishable foods.
3.. Wash foods carefully.
4.. Wash hands before eating, when handling food, and after using the toilet.
5.. Brush teeth after each meal to help prevent decay and other dental problems.
6.. Always cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing.
7.. Wear shoes, sandals, or foot coverings so feet won't pick up germs from the
ground.
8.. Eat properly and get enough rest. Germs are less able to infect a healthy
body.
9.. Make sure that water, milk, and other foods are safe to eat.
10.. . Protect against some diseases by being immunized. In most parts of the
world, people can receive immunizations at a health clinic or from a physician.
11.. . Obey the law of chastity.
Wash Cloth Bunnies: I take a inexpensive white or colored washcloth and roll the
corners into each other until they meet in the middle. I then fold it in half
with the rolled edges out. Then I fold the "ears" up, by folding it in half
again. I then tie it with a ribbon around the "waist", behind the ears. I add
eyes and pom-pom nose and tail and tie a bar of Ivory on with the ribbon.
When I taught this lesson I had a "medical bag", (I
colored a red cross on white paper and glued it to
the front of a paper bag). In the medical bag there was something to represent 9
of the 11 ways that we prevent disease. The girls came up and picked something
out of the bag and had to try to guess what it had to do with preventing
disease. For example- saran wrap to represent keeping food covered, and
immunization schedule for keeping immunizations up to date, etc. The girls
enjoyed trying to figure out what the items represented. I also started the
lesson with the T/F quiz on
Young Women Connection,
and used the handout with the Purell sanitizer. The girls loved it. (Cindy
