Cooking with Obedience
by Erica in Louisiana
I just did this lesson on and did
something kind of fun. At the beginning, for an attention getter I told the
girls, y'all know how much I love to cook, and y'all know I can make some
dang
good cookies. Well, I wanted to make you some today, but I just didn't
have time. So, I am going to just mix them up right now and we can bake
them while we have our lesson. They were all pretty excited at this point. I
told them, "Man, I hope have everything I need to make these good cookies."
(I had a brown paper bag filled with all my ingredients). I got out the
recipe card and said, "I forgot my glasses (I don't even wear glasses, and they
didn't catch on) Ariel, could you read this recipe off to me and I'll follow
your directions. So I set up just like I am going to make cookies but when she
reads off the "recipe" ( it was just a fake one I made up) I dig in my bag and
say, "Yep! Okay! I got that!"
The twist is this:
1/2 oil = motor oil
2 eggs = i just threw the whole eggs in shell and all
1/2 sugar = powdered sugar
1c flour = silk flowers i cut up
1 tsp salt = garlic salt
1 bag chips = potato chips
The girls were so shocked! The point is that our Heavenly Father has given
us a "recipe" for the lives he wants for us, and also gives us the ingredients
to make our lives good, but if we don't follow the counsel he has given and we
make up our own ingredients and recipe then it doesn't turn out as He intended.
Play it up. The girls are going to just gross out and laugh. I said things
like, "Oh man...this IS motor oil huh? Well, what does the recipe said? it
says just oil? Well, this all I have so it will have to work." Or,
"I think the shells will give it a nice texture, don't you? Oh you think I
should use CHOCOLATE chips? Hmmmm, that does make more sense! Oh well.
I only brought these corn chips, they will have to do. You may want to have some
REAL cookies for them too later in the lesson or afterwards.
