Patti's Lesson Plans

I finally had a chance today to sit down and think about what I
want to do for lesson 2 on Sunday. I only have a few minutes to teach this
lesson so I really had to pick and choose what things I want to include. I
decided that I am going to put each of the spiritual gifts on poster board and
make them into a puzzle. I will then wrap each puzzle piece in wrapping paper
and give them to each of the girls. I will have them open their gifts and as I
read D&C 46:8-26, I will have the girls put the puzzle together on the floor.
After the puzzle is put together, I will explain that each gift completes the
puzzle. For example, in order to have the gift of Faith in the testimony of
others, you need to have someone with the gift of giving a Testimony of Jesus
Christ. Each gift (or puzzle piece) isn't as valuable on it's own as when it is
shares or combined with other gifts. I wish I could claim this idea as my own
but I got
the
idea for the puzzle from a CD called Young Women Handouts and Object Lessons.
It was done by Linda Dastrup. I changed one or two things but the main idea
came from her.
Another thing I am thinking of doing is to give each girl a copy of the quote by
Neal A. Maxwell. Below that, I will list each of the spiritual gifts and have
them mark a star next to the ones they know they already have and then have them
mark a check next to the ones they would like to develop. I will then
include the ways they can recognize which gifts they already have as well as the
ways they can acquire the additional gifts. That way, if I need to skip over
that part of the lesson due to time restraints, they will still have something
to take home that they can look at.
Finally, I am going to take an empty box, wrap it in wrapping paper and copy the
quote by Elder Maxwell (“Our gifts and
opportunities differ; some are more visible and impactful. … We all have at
least one gift and an open invitation to seek ‘earnestly the best
gifts.’ (D&C
46:8.)” -Neal A. Maxwell,
in Conference Report, Oct. 1976, p. 15; or Ensign, Nov. 1976, p. 14) as well as the scripture in 1st Timothy. I will give
these to the girls at the end of the lesson and encourage them to develop their
spiritual gifts.
This may all seem like a bit much but I feel that I need to give them as much
info as possible in the short time I will have and for me, the best way to do
that is to give them a couple handouts.
