Handout from Christy's Clipart
As a handout to go with the Courage to Try lesson, I gave each of
my Laurels a small bottle of red fingernail polish. I put the polish in a clear
cellophane bag and tied it with a red ribbon. I attached a tag that said "Red is
for Courage" (taken from the little Primary song "Our primary colors are one,
two, three, red, yellow and blue...) I also put the quote from the lesson on the
tag--the one that said that courage along with faith was the best tool for
improving our lives. I thought the red was also appropriate because it is the
color that goes along with the value "Individual Worth", which fits with this
lesson. (Credit Unknown)

I teach the Mia-Maids in my ward and I just gave a
lesson on Courage. The lesson has the story of Esther. I gave each of my girls
a star Christmas ornament that would remind them to be a "shining example and
have the courage to stand up for what is right and to pray and ask Heavenly
Father for help when taking on new things that might scare us. (Idea by Jana

This
was my favorite lesson many years ago!! I was so struck with a commercial by
Michael Jordan at the time...it started with a black screen - you only heard his
voice. He listed the insane numbers of the thousands of missed shots, times he
lost the winning basket, etc., etc. Then the lights came up on him and he said,
"I have failed time and again...and THAT is why I succeed." So I took some
old trophies and awards of mine and covered the name, and used them as a table
display. I asked the girls to tell me what they thought this person was like.
Several had guesses of highly accomplished Laurels in our ward, etc. After we
discussed the winning traits of this person I told them about another girl. She
was shy, and although she tried out for everything she didn't make the final
cut. For each experience I shared of failure I placed a kidney bean on the
table. When I was done talking about this girl I had a little hill of beans on
the side opposite the trophies and awards. We discussed what this girl might
be/look like. As expected, it was all the opposite qualities of the other
side of the table. Imagine their surprise when they learned that not only was
the "mystery girl" me, but I was the same girl represented on both sides of the
table! I gave them a little handout with some beans glued to it that read, "When
you think you're life isn't amounting a hill of beans, remember that success
comes from those beans!" (Idea by Holly Schwendiman /
