We took our girls to a beauty school (it was a Paul Mitchell
beauty school, but I bet others would be willing to do the same thing) and they
talked to the girls about how to take care of their hair, skin, etc. Then some
of the students did some quick styles on the girls (and leaders too). Our girls
loved it and was more effective than having one of us stand up and blabber on
about how often to wash hair, face, etc. We took a digital camera and took lots
of fun pictures. (Idea by Stephanie)

Have each young woman draw a picture of a temple. Not easy...that's
okay...give it your best shot. After a few minutes go around to each young
woman's picture and draw all over it with a marker. You'll get stares of
disbelief. They may or may not ask why you did that. Explain that
our bodies are just like these temples, sacred and precious. How do you
think Heavenly Father feels when we don't take care of them or even tattoo our bodies? Is it really much
different than what I just did? (Melanie Day)
I brought in a picture of the temple and hung it on the
board. Then we read the scripture quoted at the beginning of the lesson that
talks about our bodies being temples. I was teaching the beehives and we talked
for a few minutes about what 'defile' means. I've found sometimes that when we
read scriptures - they don't always know what some of the words are - so we
spend a few minutes talking about that. Then I passed a can of spray paint to
one of the girls and I said - 'now go up there and spray paint something on the
side of the temple - you know like "I love my Heavenly Father" or something like
that' She looked at me like I had 2 heads and kind of tentatively said 'No'. So
I asked if anyone wanted to go spray paint the temple. Well one of the other
beehives jumps up and says 'I get it, I get it - our bodies are temples just
like that temple and spray painting the Orlando Temple would be like getting a
tattoo on our bodies' She was so excited. Drove the message home. (Tammi in Port
Orange, Florida)
I thought for this next week's lesson I would make a
little mystery bag or box and put a few items relating to grooming, nutrition,
and the word of wisdom (ex: hair ties, comb, bar of soap, piece of fruit,
toothbrush, make-up item, etc). Then have each girl feel around inside for
5 seconds. After everyone has had a turn I would then ask the girls to pair up
and discuss together what they found and think of a title or objective for the
lesson....something to that affect anyway. Option: Or you could choose
items from just one of the focus points (Grooming) and fill the bag with just
those items to help you lead into the discussion. I think everyone likes a
little mystery and variety every now and then.

My mom gave me the best idea for lesson 37. I guess
last Sunday they had a lesson on treating our bodies as a temple or something to
that effect. The teacher passed out pictures of the temple with "graffiti"
written on it. Things like "Go Team!" a heart with "Jeff loves Sarah" etc. etc.
Things that kids like to write on their hands or whatever. She had a staple in
it as well, for body piercing. You could elaborate on the picture however you'd
like. She used the scripture 1 Cor. 3:16-17, which is one I love to quote.
In school I always hated it when people would write on my hands (didn't do it
myself, either), so when they would try to, I look at them and say (jokingly,
not reprovingly. I like my friends, ha ha) "Know ye not that I am the temple of
God, and that the spirit of God dwelleth within me?" They would laugh at that,
but they wouldn't write on me. (Idea by Lorrie in Pennsylvania)
You can recognize women who are grateful to be a
daughter of God by their outward appearance. These women understand their
stewardship over their bodies and treat them with dignity. They care for their
bodies as they would a holy temple, for they understand the Lord's teaching:
"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth
in you?" (1 Cor. 3:16). Women who love God would never abuse or deface a temple
with graffiti. Nor would they throw open the doors of that holy, dedicated
edifice and invite the world to look on. How even more sacred is the body, for
it was not made by man. It was formed by God. We are the stewards, the keepers
of the cleanliness and purity with which it came from heaven. "If any man defile
the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which
temple ye are" (1 Cor. 3:17). Grateful daughters of God guard their bodies
carefully, for they know they are the wellspring of life and they reverence
life. They don't uncover their bodies to find favor with the world. They walk in
modesty to be in favor with their Father in Heaven. For they know He loves them
dearly. (Margaret D. Nadauld, Young Women General President, Oct 2000 Semiannual
General Conference)
We just had this lesson and there is a part where
they are to take a few minutes and list all the fruits and vegetables they can
think of ... well, there were a few mentioned that some of the YW had never even
heard of - which gave me the idea (that we used at Wednesday activity) to bring
in some of unusual fruits for a "taste testing" (along with another activity).
It went over soooooo well - one of the Beehives said it was one of the best
activities she'd been to! One fruit that we tried was a "Horned or Kiwano Melon"
- it's bright orangey-yellow with spikes all over ... it was really cool to look
at (especially when we opened it and found lots of seeds in a bright green
slime) ... as to taste - there really was none, but maybe we missed any
flavoring 'cause the slimey sensation in our mouths 'caused most everyone to
spit it out right away!!!! 8^) ... it just happened to be the most expensive
piece too! We also had "Carambola / Star Fruit" (which is really cool 'cause
when you slice it it creates a star shape), "Uniq Fruit", "Root Jicama",
"Mangoes", and "Kiwi"
