Handout from Christy's Clipart
I
purchased pairs of wildly colored sunglasses at the .99 cent store for each of
my girls. Then I made a postcard sized paper with a big sun wearing sunglasses
clip art. Then I attached a LOOK candy bar and the crazy sunglasses to the
paper.
Put this poem on a cardstock paper kite....Make a tail for the kite and tie it
with cloth torn out of the value colors.
If you ever feel tempted
to take what's second best.
Just stop and think a moment-
this life is just a test.
This life serves a purpose for each in their own way
You will choose what you will do each and every day.
It's up to you to nourish it and make your Father proud
It's up to you to set your goals
and FLY ABOVE THE CROWD!

I
am taking the TV commercial idea of "Priceless", but turning it into useless
instead of Priceless. I made posters that correspond to the word strips Study,
Think, Pray and DO, adding pictures to each one. Then I talk about each
one, leading up the pretense that like the TV commercial after they add
everything up with a dollar value, it ends up being "Priceless". Study - searing
the scriptures to learn the right way, learning of the regret of others of not
marrying in the temple. Think - Pondering what you really want our of life,
Making the decision to Marry in the temple. Pray - Getting on your knees in
sincere prayer asking Heavenly Father to help you do what is right and follow
his directions. Then when I get to DO - I show a picture of a girl and a boy
standing together, with the Boy smoking. The words say "But going on a date with
someone who is not worthy to take you to the Temple" - USELESS!!! (Annie Poulsen

One thing I did to start the lesson off was I had one of
the girls (who I had asked earlier to do this) contradict all the true
statements that I made. She justified, rationalized, etc. in order to contradict
what I said. The last one I gave her--"You have a father in heaven who lives and
loves you"--totally stumped her! She couldn't contradict or disagree with that!
Then we discussed how truth doesn't change--regardless of how Satan wants us to
justify, distort, rationalize, etc. the facts are always the same. We can buy
into these lies if we want to, but it doesn't change what is real. We also spent
time discussing where we go to find truth--friends, parents, experts,
scriptures, prayer. I emphasized that Heavenly Father, the author of truth, who
doesn't change, is the best resource and the best place to receive truth.
Finally, when we talked about discerning good from evil, I asked them if their
parents were sending them off on a journey to the Arctic, would they send them
in flip-flops, shorts, and a couple of granola bars? (or whatever) Obviously
not. I pointed out that their Father in Heaven, who loves them very much, did
not send them here to fail. He wants them each to succeed; they have been
blessed to have certain keys to help them to know truth...and we talked about
the scripture in the lesson & the keys they have. In this section I wanted to
emphasize the gift of the Holy Ghost they all had.
We used a cell phone & played different ring tones
which illustrated the different feelings they got from the different tones.
They all had definite reactions to the tones. Likewise, the Holy Ghost helps the
us feel good or bad about things, to help us to know what is good. The girls
also pointed out that a tone that might be "annoying" at first may be something
you can get used to--if you hear it enough. Similarly, we can lose site of truth
if we buy into the lies long enough. (Idea by Desiree Crosby/ga09062006)
