"A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step" I
was going to use my baby footprint stamp to make a small handout for each
girl. Or use a street sign pointing different ways. Using a story about a
small deviation for our course can make a big difference in where we end up.
Along the lines of using a stop sign, I made some posters once that deal a bit
more with moral purity & dating, but you could possibly use them. I made the
signs on the posters and then had the words written next to it. (Credit

STOP - with a goodnight kiss!
NO PASSING ZONE - Passes are not acceptable
SOFT SHOULDERS - etc, are hard to resist so...Dress Modestly!
NO PARKING! (The sign for this is just a car with the diagonal line
through it)
YIELD! - to the Lords spirit...especially when dating!
ONE WAY - There is only (one way) to achieve worthiness for a Temple

My Advisor did a great job with this lesson. She
talked about when she was in high school she didn't date at all she thought her
life was over and assumed she was a loser because she didn't have a boyfriend
(this women is gorgeous and has a personality to match) She then talked about
going to BYU and all the fun she had with groups of people. Some of her
favorite dates or activities were done with lots of people. She said until she
was engaged she had only been on 2 single dates with her fiancé'! It had given
her a great opportunity to mix with so many different kinds of people and make a
better choice of who she wanted. She talked about making themselves more
interesting by learning and developing talents now rather than moping around
because they were not dating. Her hand-out was so cute! She had made chocolate
chip cookies and on one of them she had only put one chocolate chip. She
demonstrated group dating as the cookie with lots of chips in it -it was so much
more enjoyable etc. compared to the cookie with one chip -boring! It helped the
Young Women realize that if this beautiful woman felt the same way they did then
maybe they shouldn't worry so much about high school dating, boyfriends and
such. (Idea by Wendy in
San Diego)

So what kind of man do you want to marry (candy bar
activity)
We have a "YW Pow Wow"....everyone makes a circle and we
have a frank discussion with the girls. We let them talk to us about their
concerns, good & bad experiences, fears, things they look forward to,
why they think the rules are in place and why we start dating at 16 vs. any
other age, what they are looking for in a date, etc...anything the girls want to
discuss. I did this two years ago, then on Sunday my Laurel advisor (who was a
laurel when I did it) did the same thing...she said she really enjoyed it when
she was in Young Women and she enjoyed discussing...she got more out of
it than just being told the "rules". (Idea by Angela Maylin)
