Grain of Sugar, Skittles and Dum-Dums
Adapted from Julie Marsh

Purpose
:  To help them to understand how a little participation on their part can greatly increase their understanding of the gospel and make young women's more than just a "place to be".

Procedure: First, go around to each girl and give them one grain of sugar (or as few as possible). I had them eat it and tell me what they tasted. Many lost their grain before they could taste it, many did not even taste it because it was so small. Then I gave them each 1 Skittle (any sweet, quickly eaten candy will work). I had them compare the grain of sugar to the Skittle. Then I made the analogy of just being at Young Women's to the sugar grain and coming and maybe opening their scriptures and following along to the Skittle. Then I handed out a Dumdum pop (any lollipop or long lasting, hard candy will work). Then I asked them to tell me what they needed to do to make Young Women's like the lollipop, where it will last a long time. They gave great answers, but the one I was most appreciative of was "we can apply what we learn to our lives". They got it!  I have now said they cannot make Young Women's a grain of sugar. They must apply themselves, attend the activities and participate to get something meaningful and lasting from it. Another benefit, they all had a lollipop in their mouth so they didn't visit with one another for a few minutes.
