Ward Campout
by Lee Slichter

We have an annual ward camp-out each July near Pioneer Day in a near-by campground.  The ward supplies the campground rental ($30-50 depending on where we go), the meat, potatoes and corn on the cob for Friday night dinner (families bring salads and dessert) and there is a pioneer-flavored campfire program-this year we will have square dancing with a live band made up of ward members-along with old-fashioned games going on.  After the formal program, the kids (Primary to almost ready to leave on missions) have a hoot playing impromptu games of "No Bears Out Tonight" and "Capture the Flag".  We try to stay away from other campers because we are sometimes a little loud with the laughing and fellowshipping that happens deep into the night.  The adults often sit around the campfire and tell each other stories and get to know one another better while the kids run around and play.  We have a wonderful group of older kids that set a good example for the younger ones and watch over them as well.  So it works great for us.  The ward also supplies breakfast the next morning for those who decide to camp-some choose to go home after the campfire program but some stay all day Saturday as well and fish and swim with their own picnic lunches.  We have been doing this for years and it is always fun.
