Family Fear
Factor Party
Each family forms a team. Combine families if
needed to make teams of at least three or four individuals at minimum. Teams
do not have to be equal in size.
Gathering Games
Fear Factor Mad Lib- Mad Libs puts out a
Fear Factor edition. Complete one or two of these while waiting for your
entire group to arrive.
Harry Potter Jelly Bean Guessing Game.
Play a jellybean flavor guessing game. Purchase a gift size box of Harry
Potter "Bertie Botts Jelly beans" These jelly beans come in ten nasty
flavors and can be purchased for about $5 - $6 at a specialty candy store or
on the Internet from
www.jellybelly.com. They contain 10 jellybeans of each
flavor, for a total of 100 jellybeans. Label each compartment of jellybeans
with a number (1-10). Remove the plastic case from the box, so that it is
not apparent that these are Harry Potter jellybeans. Using a game spinner,
(I used the game spinner from a LIFE game) have each person spin a number
and take the corresponding jellybean. When all people have chosen their
jellybean call a number. All those people with that number must taste their
jellybean at the same time and try to guess what flavor it is. The fun is
that they are nasty flavors, like vomit, dirt, booger, earwax, etc. It goes
perfect with the Fear Factor theme.
Challenge Events (set up outdoors) -
Unlike the TV Fear Factor game, there is no elimination of teams. I chose to
set it up this way, so every family got to participate in all the
challenges. That way I didn't have unhappy, wandering kids. Events are
either whole team events or teams choose 2 or 3 people to participate in
some of the challenges. You don't have to keep score, but if you want to
this is what I did... winners were judged by a winning time or by best
completion of the event. Points were awarded to each team, after each event.
We had a big poster board to keep a running total for all to see. We had six
families participate so we had six different score totals possible. First
place team got 10 pts., 2nd place- 5 points, 3rdplace- 4 points, 4dlplaoe- 3
points, 5thplace -2 points, and 6thplaoe- 1 point after the completion of
each event. You can alter these according to your number of teams. Scores
were totaled at the end of the evening and prizes awarded to all the
contestants! These are the eight challenge events we played at our Family Fear Factor event …you could probably come up with some other great ones or just tweak these to work for your group. One or two stopwatches will be very important to have. If possible, it would be nice to have plenty of adults on hand, some to time and judge, some to set up the next event, and some to take photos. I did it with just me in charge and it still worked out fine, except that I would have loved to have some photos or videos of some of the events.
1. Slimy Swap- Each team lines up in
relay formation. Each team is given about 8 -10 raw eggs. The person at the
beginning of the line must crack the egg somehow with their hands and crack
it into the next person's hands. That person places the raw eggs into the
next teammates hands and so on where the last person drops it into a clear
cup. Teams may complete this challenge all at the same time. Winning team
has the most liquid eggs in their cups. This event was timed for 25 seconds.
Messy—have a hose and hand towels ready for clean up!
2. Bubble Trouble- Each team lines up
and each person is given a gumball. I got eyeball gumballs that oozed red
syrup when you bit into them, from Oriental Trading Company or look for bags
of them during the Halloween season. When the clock starts they put the gum
into their mouth, chew and try to blow a bubble. Time is stopped when the
first member of their team blows a bubble. If you have two stop watches, you
can time two teams at a time. Best overall time wins first place.
3. Chill Out- Each team chooses two
people to compete in this challenge. One person sits in a chair and holds a
large paper cup on their head. The other person puts on a blindfold and
stands behind the chair. He is given a pitcher of ice water. When the clock
starts the person pours water into the cup on his teammate's head. He cannot
touch or feel for the cup. Teams were given 15 seconds for this event. The
team with the most water in their cup when the clock stops takes first
place.
4. Pucker Up- Choose one person from
your team to compete in this challenge. Fill small cups with 1 TBSP of lemon
juice concentrate. We filled four cups and timed how long it took each
person to drink the four cups. Each team was timed separately. Winning time
took 1st place. This challenge was great fun, and the crowd loved to cheer
others on, I guess it's -the Mormon version of whiskey shot glasses!
5. In Your Face- Choose two people from
your team to compete in this challenge. One person sits in a chair and puts
a thick layer of shaving cream all over their face. The other person is
given a baggie full of Cheetos. They stand a fair distance away and when the
clock starts they must toss Cheetos one at a time at their teammate's face.
All teams may compete at the same time in this event. They were given 45
seconds to throw. When the clock stops each team counts the number of
Cheetos that stuck to the their teammate's face. 1st place is awarded to the
team with the highest number. Really funny, have your camera ready! 6. You Dirty Rat- For this event I purchased 1 dozen big plastic rats from Oriental Trading Co. You could use anything eke that you think might work . Watch for the clearance sales at Halloween for some sort of creepy plastic animal, maybe snakes or spiders, etc. Teams choose two people to compete in this challenge. Two teams competed at the same time. Two bowls were filled with six rats in each bowl. One person (without using their hands) has to pick up a rat by its tail with their teeth and fling it to their teammate who tries to catch it in an empty bucket. Each team was given 45 seconds to complete this challenge. When finished, the next two teams competed. Team with the most rats caught took 1st place. If there was a tie, both teams were awarded 1st place points, etc. If you are worried about germs, take a minute to spray alcohol on the plastic rats before the next group starts. This one was a hoot to watch!
7. Whoopee! - Purchase 12 whoopee
cushions. Wal-Mart or the $1 stores have them for pretty cheap. I purchased
eyeball whoopee cushions from Oriental Trading. Inflate all of the
cushions. Lay two sheets or plastic tablecloths on the ground. Place six
inflated whoopee cushions on each sheet. Choose one teammate to compete in
this challenge. Each team goes separately in this event, with the other
teams watching. At the start of the clock players must deflate each whoopee
cushion (completely) by sitting on them. Team with the best time wins 1st
place. Even though this challenge is done one team at a time, two game areas
were set up because the whoopee cushions take some time to re-inflate. This
way the other game area was ready to go as soon as the first one was done.
Some of the people sat a little too hard and popped -the whoopee cushions,
so we made them deflate the cushions with their head instead. It
wasn't as hard on the whoopee cushions,
8. Yummy Gummy- Make a gummy worm Cool
Whip pie using small foil pans. Bury 5-6 gummy worms in Cool Whip. Teams
choose 3 people to compete in this challenge. Each team is timed separately
for this challenge, while other teams watch. One person is the mama bird,
and the other two are her babies. Put the mama bird on the end of a table
with the pie tin in front of her. Each baby stands or kneels at either side
of the mama bird. The mama bird, using only her mouth (no hands!) must get
one worm from the pie at a time. When she has one worm in her mouth she then
must place it into the mouth of a waiting teammate. That teammate must chew
and swallow the worm before they may accept another. The mama bird must
retrieve all the worms from the pie and the baby birds must have them all
chewed and swallowed before the clock is stopped. First place is awarded to
the team with the quickest time. With families, this challenge wasn't too
gross, but if your doing it with a youth group it might seem too gross or
risqué in a group with boys and girls, since your mouths nearly touch when
passing the worm. Alter the challenge to fit the needs of your group. Maybe
just have the mama bird place them on a plate where the baby birds must eat
them or have the mama bird chew and swallow all the worms herself, Total
points up and award prizes to all the teams. First place family got a
package of $100,000 Dollar candy bars and a $5 Blockbuster gift card so they
could watch a really scary movie together since "fear was not a factor for
them"! Other prizes could be candy...milk duds for last place, Rocky road
bars, Zero bars, Butterfingers bars, etc. for other places scored. About one
week after the event I saw some cheap (69 cents) Fear Factor school folders
at Target in the "Back to School" section. These would have made great
prizes. Refreshments were chocolate pudding dirt cups complete with gummy worms oozing out of them. It was a really fun night and would be great for Young Women / Young Men, an adult party, ward activity or family reunion. We did it at our family reunion this year …we had to change it a bit because we were indoors, but it made for some great memories. Have FUN!
