Visiting Teaching Dinner
by Dani Lawton from Australia

Our Visiting Teaching coordinator organized a Visiting Teaching Dinner and she did a fantastic job.  She focused on the "FRUITS" of the gospel.  We only gave the sisters hints as to what it was about in the lead up, i.e. bowls of fruit, etc.  On the night, the room was set up lovely.  There were appetizers on the tables, i.e. fruit cheese on biscuits, LIME and black pepper chips, etc.  She had fruity essence in the candle water on the tables.  There was a small display set up saying "What fruits are you producing?" with a beautiful, fresh fruit bowl and also a bowl of rotting fruit.

We then had our dinner which was all types of fruit dishes (i.e. roast pork with apple sauce, mango chicken, ham and pineapple pizza, strawberry salad, etc).  We then got onto our presentation.  We had bingo cards on the table that were blank, with a list of words on the whiteboard we were to fill in whatever order we liked.  As the presentation/ workshops were done, as the words were said, you crossed them off and yelled bingo!  We had a prize for the first person to get a straight line, and a prize for the first person the get a diagonal line.

Our Visiting Teaching coordinator then gave an introduction, then we got into our workshops.  The way we did it, was to have all the sisters still seated at their tables but facing the front of the room, where there was a table set up for each workshop.

The first workshop was on fruit (by our 1st Counselor in Relief Society), and she talked about barriers that we find to Visiting Teaching (i.e. not enough time, poor health, etc).  The whole evening was very interactive.  The second workshop was on ice-cream (by our VT assistant), which talked about the fun things that could be done for VT (i.e. scrapbooking, movies, etc - just trying to get the sisters to think outside the box).  We actually had a piece of paper on each table that we asked the sisters to think of ideas for, before we started dinner.

The next workshop was on topping (by our Relief Society President) and on how to be a top Visiting Teacher.  We had a video presentation which we had previously filmed about bad examples of Visiting Teaching, very funny!  We then went through them and picked out all the bad things, so hopefully we won't do them!  (i.e. not making an appointment, staying too long, only being interested in the statistics, etc.)

The next workshop was done by myself (2nd Counselor in Relief Society) and it was on sprinkles!  i.e. malteasers (big priorities like prayer, scriptures, VT, etc.), M&M's  (medium priorities like work, housework, etc.), and sprinkles (incidentals like shopping, talking on the phone, crafts, etc).  And basically it was on the priorities lesson.  (Where if you do the small things first you run out of time for the more important things, but if you focus on the important things first, you can fit in the smaller things too)  Putting in the sprinkles first, then the M&M's and then the malteasers, you run out of room, but if you put in the malteasers first, then the m and m's then the sprinkles, it all fits!

The last workshop was on spoons and on feed my sheep (done by our Relief Society Secretary).  All these workshops went for about 5 - 10 minutes each.

We then had our Visiting Teaching Coordinator sum it all up and give us the last part of the workshop, which was the sundae glasses.  These represent commitment and if we have a lot of commitment (large bowl) we can get a lot of rewards, but if we have a small amount of commitment (small cup) the rewards are not so great.  She then gave each of us an agreement that we could sign, which was for 100% effort (not results).  We then had our Relief Society say a few words, then we all made up our own sundaes!  Delicious!
