Temple
Activity Day
by Tara Larsen / ga03082007

We did a Temple activity last summer with
our Primary and I was so pleased with the way it turned out. We began several
weeks before the trip by talking about the temple and how neat it would be to
go. We gave out invitations and on them put "Please wear church clothing to show
reverence for the Temple". We went over to the temple (30 minute trip, we're
lucky!) and met with the Temple President and Matron (again, we were lucky as
they are from our ward so some of the kids recognized them.) They spoke to us
about why we have temples and specifically about the history of our temple
(Vernal Temple). Then I took a picture of all the children with them and the
temple in the background. Next, we walked quietly around the temple grounds and
let the children look around. A newly married couple were having their pictures
taken so we talked about temple marriage. We let the children each reverently
touch the door of the temple because my 1st counselor (an amazing person!) told
us that one of the prophets had said something to the effect of "Let the
children touch the temple, so the temple may touch them". Then we went
next door to the stake center and had a picnic lunch on the lawn where we could
see the temple. Then we had each child either write or draw about their feelings
about the temple. As they did this, I took each child and took their picture
with the temple in the background. Then we bore our testimony of the temple and
went home. It wasn't anything fancy but it was really nice. Also, I made a
scrapbook page for each child with the picture of the group with the Temple
President and Matron as well as their individual picture in front of the temple.
I also included the paper they had written or drawn on about the temple. They
turned out beautiful and I had many parents tell me how much they loved it.
We really enjoyed this activity.
