Ideas on Service
You
could make
fortune cookies and
you could insert
these service
ideas into the fortune cookies. Then pass them out and then
use the ideas about how selfless service makes you feel.

Especially for children:
Tell the children that they are going to learn an
important sentence. Ask them to follow the actions with you, and then you will
all repeat the sentence together. “Love (raise one hand) and serve (raise the
other hand) go hand in hand (clasp hands together).” You may want to wear gloves
labeled “love” and “serve.” Explain to the children that when we love people we
want to serve them, and when we serve people we come to love them. Before
Primary prepare six handprints labeled with the following scriptures:
Deut. 10:12;
Josh. 22:5;
Gal. 5:13;
Mosiah 4:15;
Moro. 7:13;
D&C 20:19.
Place the handprints around the room. Have the children take turns choosing a
handprint and looking up the scripture. Invite the children to raise one hand
when they hear the word love and then the other hand when they hear the
word serve. Sing
“When We’re Helping”
(p.198) and
“Love One Another”
(p. 136) in a round. Have the children help each other trace their
handprints onto pieces of paper. Label the hands “love” and “serve.” For
younger children: Ask the children to draw a picture on each hand of how
they can love and serve. Have the children fold the paper in half so that their
hands can go “hand in hand.” For older children: Have the children write
something they can do to love and serve others on each finger. Ask them to
choose one of the things they have written to do that day. [This idea is from

Suggestion]
I am planning to make cookies, I'll turn to one side of the room, be all
sweet and lovely and tell them how much I enjoyed baking for them, what a
pleasure it was to serve them.... to the other side I will hand them the cookies
and complain about how long it took and what I wanted to be doing, what an
inconvenience it was... Then I want to get feed back on the difference, and how
we can try to be more selfless and less selfish when we serve others, and how
much greater the blessings are when we serve with a smile.

Selfless Service
What is REAL: Christ-like Service
- Service comes in many forms and many ways and all are
worthy. All service leads us to be more like the Savior, to be at one with Him
and our Heavenly Father. We will grow most when we include the Holy Ghost in
our service and he will teach us and guide us to serve in a more Christ like
way. As we are influenced by inspiration from Him who knows each of us
intimately, who knows specifically our needs at the moment that we need them,
then we will have access to the perfect way to serve. The beauty of Christ-like
service, or inspired service is, as King Solomon said, "None is so great that he
needs no help, and none so small that he cannot give it." (Women's Conference
2006)

Last
week, a young man in our ward spoke in sacrament meeting on service. As he
gave his talk, he removed his jacket, loosened his tie and took it off, started
unbuttoning his shirt, took off his belt, and took off his shoes. All the
while he just gave his talk without any mention of what he was doing until the
very end, and then he said, "You probably won't remember a word I said by the
time you get home, but you will never forget what I did. Actions speak
louder than words."
Using
popcorn kernels, demonstrate how we can be hard when we do not serve others, but
when "popped" or filled with air, we are light and fluffy.

A lady
came to our RS recently to talk about service we can give in the community and
passed on an idea of hers. She suggested that when women get a new purse that
they take their old purse and fill it with some small cosmetics that they might
have left over--like hotel shampoos, lotions, or free samples or gifts they have
never used, and put them in the purse and take them to the local women's
shelter. She checked with them and they were thrilled with the idea. They said
that oftentimes the women and children come there with nothing but what they are
wearing. I guess for a Primary service project the children could ask their
mother or grandmother for a purse and small goodies to
put in it and then at the activity they could write little notes to tuck inside
that have fun messages on them. (Idea by Jan Blake)
