I give them the music cd from whatever year we are studying.  They are $1.50 from the Distribution center. (Idea by Mary Ahn)

I make breakfast for the student's birthdays.  I have a small class of 5, which makes this possible.  If their birthday is not on a class day, we usually celebrate the Friday before.  We celebrate summer birthdays at their half birthday which makes it nice makes it nice to have a couple extra celebrations in the winter.  I usually try to make something nice, but simple that I think they would like.  I have the students fill out an interest survey at the beginning of the year to give me ideas. (Idea by Barbara Nelson)

Last year I gave the students a pillow case with an iron-on transfer I printed out on my computer.  It had a clock and said Seminary is the best way to start the day and then I put the place (since we live in Japan) and the year.  One year I did the iron-on transfers on a t-shirt but I liked the pillow case better.  One year I got a small pencil box and put in things like a pencil, eraser, small calculator, etc. with a saying on it.  Such as, Pencil in time for scripture study, and erase sin from your life. (Idea by Leslie Johnson)

On birthdays we bring in the cushy wing chair from outside the bishops office and the birthday person gets to sit there the whole morning.  They get a box of their favorite cereal and we read some stuff about them from their surveys - favorite foods, vacation, scripture story, etc.  They love getting a whole box of cereal to eat all day - junk they might not get all to themselves like Cookie Crisp.  We do it at beginning and it's never a big issue - takes a few minutes.  Summer birthdays celebrated on their half birthday. (Idea by Suzie Wiley)

This year I have found a birthday idea that my students seem to really like, and might have an actual use for.  I made each of them a locker magnet. I did this by using large, clear flat marbles (these marbles can be found in the floral departments of most any store).  I then went through old issues of Church magazines, Deseret Book flyers, etc... looking for small pictures or quotes that had something to do with the D&C. This is easy and quick - I just had a large flat marble in hand and as I looked for pictures I would place the clear marble over the picture I was considering.  The marble acts as a magnifier and it is actually quite fun.  Then I used regular Elmer's white glue to stick the picture on the flat side of the marble, added a small round magnet (also available almost anywhere) to the back and I was done.  I made several of these and displayed them on a little metal frame.  They are all finished and the students get to choose one on their birthday, along with choosing one of the many birthday songs from the children's songbook to have the class sing to them.  I have taught several years and was surprised when my students were so excited about these magnets.  In fact, I have others, not in my class asking if they might have one. (Idea by Shauna) - Click here to see an example of this type of magnet.

We are celebrating birthdays once a month with the prophet/s  who share that birthday month.  Those with summer birthdays, prophets or students, will celebrate on their half birthday.  They get  cupcakes.  I figure I can make cupcakes once a month. (Idea by Gina)

When they filled out their surveys, one of the questions was "What is your favorite cereal?"  On their birthdays, I brought a giant box  of their favorite cereal, big paper cups, spoons and milk.  The kids could  help themselves to a cup of cereal as they walked into class.  Then we sand  to them at the end of class.  Believe it or not, it wasn't distracting to  have them eat during the beginning of class.  They always disposed of their  trash and latecomers either didn't eat or were very quiet about getting  some. I asked my son last night night what his favorite Scripture Mastery game was when he was in Seminary. He said it was a game where one student sat in a chair and all the other students stood around him/her in a circle. The teacher would call out a scripture master and all the kids would throw marshmallows at the one looking up the scripture till he/she found it, stood up and read or recited it. Then that student would choose another student to be in the hot seat.  I thought it sounded silly, but decided to try it anyway. The kids LOVED it!! They said it was the most fun scripture mastery game they had ever played. Its rambunctious and loud, but they sure did enjoy it. And its really easy! -Terisa, Wyoming

Quotes on the importance of attendance to Seminary/Institute
"When you encourage students to raise their hand to respond to a question, they signify to the Holy Spirit their willingness to learn. That use of moral agency will allow the Spirit to motivate and give them more powerful guidance during your time together. Participation allows individuals to experience being led by the Spirit".  -Richard G. Scott: 'Helping Others to Be Spiritually Led [address to religious educators at a symposium on the Doctrine and Covenants and Church History, 11Aug. 1998], 3'.
