I partake of the sacrament to renew my
baptismal covenant with Heavenly Father

Attention Getter - Tell the children to listen carefully. If you say something that they should do or think about during the sacrament, they should stand up tall. If you say something they should not do or think about during the sacrament, they should bend over.

Read the following statements one at a time, giving the children time to respond.

  • 1. Remember that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love us. (Stand)

  • 2. Think about going on a picnic. (Bend)

  • 3. Remember that Jesus Christ made sick people well. (Stand)

  • 4. Whisper and talk to your neighbor. (Bend)

  • 5. Wiggle and move around in your seat. (Bend)

  • 6. Say a prayer to Heavenly Father. (Stand)

  • 7. Draw pictures or play with a toy. (Bend)

  • 8. Remember stories about Jesus Christ. (Stand)

Object Lesson - Hand someone a pencil, and ask them to "try to drop it."  Once the person drops the pencil, pick it up and say , "No, maybe my instructions weren't clear.  I said TRY to drop the pencil".  They might act confused, and maybe drop it again if so just repeat the process, but if they hold onto it and do not drop it, then say, "no what I wanted you to do was to TRY and drop it!"  Once the person gets confused or irritated with you, say thank you, and retrieve the pencil.  You can ask another to try the same thing and see if anyone does it any different. When everyone keeps dropping it or holding onto it, tell the the punch line... "There is no such thing as "Try" you either do or you don't." So lets DO what we are asked to do and not give the excuse that "We tried." (Object Lesson from Jenny Smith)  We either renew our covenants each week or we don't.  It depends on us.  The sacrament is a wonderful blessing to us.  It gives us the opportunity to become clean each week, as if we were baptized.

Sing the song, "Reverently, Quietly"

Activity - For this activity, you'll need the following items: a poster board (cut in half - one for each team), the sacrament prayers typed up twice, glue sticks, and two envelopes to put word strips in.  If you do sharing time twice (once for junior and once for senior), you'll need twice as much as is listed).

Divide the Primary into two groups (or you could do several groups but you'd have to have a posterboard and supplies for each class). Have one group find the sacrament prayers in Moroni 4, 5. Have the second group find the sacrament prayers in D&C 20:77, 79. Give each team a poster board, an envelope with the word strips and some glue sticks.  Have them assemble and put the words of the scripture and glue it on the poster board in the correct order.

Have the children compare the prayers as you read them aloud. Discuss the fact that the sacrament prayers are exactly the same in both references and have been given to us word for word, except that we use water instead of wine per the instructions of the Savior (see preface to D&C 27).

Have one person from each team come forward and circle the covenants we make as we partake of the bread and water: We covenant, or promise, to (1) remember that Jesus Christ’s body was given and that His blood was spilled for us, (2) take upon us the name of Christ and always remember Him, (3) keep the commandments. Heavenly Father covenants, or promises, that we shall always have His Spirit to be with us. Point out that there is another promise we learn about in John 6:54: “Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”   This is the promise of eternal life.

Summary - Each week when we take the sacrament, we renew the covenant we made at baptism. Each day as we choose the right and follow Jesus, we are keeping our covenant and growing in faith. As we keep the covenant we have made, the Lord’s Spirit will be with us, and one day we will be worthy to go to the temple and make other very important covenants with Heavenly Father.  Share your testimony.

Other optional Activities

After reviewing with the children the sacred nature of the sacrament, reverently visit the area in the chapel where the sacrament is prepared and blessed. Invite a priest, a teacher, and a deacon to explain to the children the responsibilities of preparing, blessing, and passing the sacrament.
