Wizard of Oz
Visiting Teaching Conference
by Carrie Hughes

A few invitation ideas:

- yellow brick road invitation
- u
se Ruby Red slippers on the invite
- a picture of a house - "There's no place like home"

We are taking a trip to Oz for the Relief Society Birthday. The sisters each receive an invitation to a birthday celebration in Oz from the wizard. The invitation is on parchment paper with a gold seal at the bottom, rolled up and tied with emerald ribbon. When the sisters get to the church the room is decorated like Kansas with black squares on the round tables and black runners on the long (on top of the white table clothes) there is various farm equipment around canning jars with sticks in it make good center pieces.  You could also use pots of gold.

The Relief Society President dressed up as Dorothy (she could even hold a stuffed animal dog and tell everyone Toto didn't want to miss out on the fun).  She told the sisters that the wizard spoke with her about our visiting teaching stats and says we can not go to OZ until we learn to be better visiting teachers. We then eat a country dinner (the suggestion was pulled pork sandwiches a various sides) we are doing fried chicken and typical sides.

After the sisters eat they attend classes in different rooms.  The classes include serving with a heart, what to do when a situation arises a ideas on ways to say you care. You could also include a history lesson on the formation of the RS and implementation of the visiting teaching program.

After the sisters come out of the classes they find a yellow brick road (yellow construction paper bricks taped to the floor) leading them to the room where they had dinner.

When they enter the room they will be in Oz. Bright colorful clothes replaced the black (I am using red, yellow and blue solids, I have also gotten a material that doesn't fray easily so that I don't have to sew it) the farm items are gone and replaced with bright decor like balloons (someone suggested balloon clusters hanging from the ceiling) I am also putting out large lollipops that have a sticker in the that says Happy Birthday from the Lollipop Guild.  Confetti and any bright birthday decor is appropriate. The sisters will then have cake and ice cream. I am buying a confetti cake from the bakery that has white icing with bright colorful icing ribbons and confetti on it that says Happy Birthday Relief Society. Yes, I am taking the easy road and buying instead of making. There is a lot to do with the decor so something needs to be easy. Luckily we have a couple of sisters in the ward that helped put on a production of OZ at a local High School. One of them did the sewing and she is bringing in costumes to put around and a backdrop of Oz. The other is providing the yellow brick road.  Sometime during the end Dorothy will get up and give her testimony on visiting teaching and Relief Society.

Possible dessert: "Rainbow" sherbet
