World Cup Singing
by Elaine in California

I am a big soccer fan, and I knew we had
quite a few kids that like and/or play soccer, so in honor of the World Cup
yesterday (that was actually being played while we sang!) we had "World Cup
Singing."
I divided the children into two teams, France & Italy. I put up two "goals"
(pictures downloaded online) on the board, and then had 2 sets of balls for the
two songs we wanted to review. Each ball had a song and/or a question on it.
Whichever team sang best or answered the question properly scored a goal. (I
just moved the ball into the net each time so it was easy for them to see how
many goals they had.)
For Jr. they either sang the whole song (each team got a chance, so twice for
each song) or I would sing a line and they would "pass it back to me" (echo what
I just sang.) With the "passing," each team got a chance so each line was sung 4
times - twice by me and once for each team. This made it fun to sing over and
over again - no one got tired of singing, they just wanted to score goals and be
the winner.
For Sr., I had questions written on the backs of the balls. Whichever team had
"possession" (they took turns choosing a ball) got the first crack at answering
the question, and we could sing the line to help them. But they also had to sing
the song in competition with the opposite team. Sr. really knew what the World
Cup was, so they really got excited when they "scored!"
I used one set of balls/questions at a time, when they were done with the first
song, we moved on to the next set of questions.
They actually ended up tied in both Jr. & Sr. because we ran out of time for
"penalty kicks." I told them it would be decided by whichever team was the most
reverent for Sharing Time. The presidency member told me that she actually lost
her place when she was reading her story because she was so distracted by the
fact that it was SO quiet!!
Definitely a "winning" singing time!
P.S. Here are the questions for the two songs we reviewed (for Jr. we just sang
the line mentioned):
"Tell Me, Dear Lord," p. 176
Sing "Tell Me, Dear Lord." (winning team gets goal)
Name 2 "prayer words"' from the song "Tell Me, Dear Lord."
1st Line: Whose "will" or "way" is being sought for in this song?
2nd line: WHAT are we asking the Lord to tell us in this line? (name at
least one of the things.)
3rd line: What do we want to be taught to "know and love" in this line?
4th line: WHAT do we want help to understand?
"Follow the Prophet," p. 110, v. 3,7,8, & 9
Sing 3rd verse of "Follow the Prophet."
What did Noah try to cry to the sinners? (v. 3, line 2)
Sing 7th verse of "Follow the Prophet."
What happens "when we really try?" (v. 7, line 3)
Sing 8th verse of "Follow the Prophet."
Why was Daniel's power great? (v. 8, line 4)
Sing 9th verse of "Follow the Prophet."
What word means "listen and obey" and starts with "h?" (v. 9, line 9)
