Troublemaker?

There are a few children in our primary who act silly and don't participate appropriately in singing time.  As fast as I can tap dance I don't seem to be able to get them interested.  I sent a card last week to one boy who is my toughest cookie.  I had to be really clever in my words so that my praise was accurate.  I said something like this:  "Thank you for singing with me in singing time!  I love it when kids set a good example for each other, and pay attention.  I'm so glad that you come to primary!  Thanks for being such a good singer!"

I didn't actually tell him HE was setting a good example, or that he was paying attention--but I was so happy yesterday!  He sat up with everyone else and even smiled when he sang!  I've been at this calling since Christmas, and this was his first real day of participation.

Hooray!  I have been sending 2 cards a week, and I love the results!  The children respond so wonderfully to me--I think each one secretly thinks they are my best singer!  I write a note, encouraging them to choose the right, and ALWAYS thanking them for singing, and praising them for the good things I have noticed about them.  Then I put a stick of gum or a balloon, etc. in it.  A little self-fulfilling prophecy goes a long way.
