The prophet said to plant a
garden
Yesterday we learned "The
Prophet Said to Plant a Garden". But we did it as a play. I made big cardboard
mask props.
Farmer (a big hat, and then 3 seeds)
Cloud (white cardboard cut into cloud shape with cotton balls)
Sun
Potato
Turnip
Carrot
I cut a face out of the veggies and used the cut out part as a "seed" for each
plant for the farmer (the
farmer planted the seeds, behind the dirt-he just dropped them back there). We
did the same thing in Sr. and Jr.
The cloud and sun also had face cut-outs.
I had a big brown thing to be dirt (a big piece of brown fabric would work, or a
blanket, etc.) It was about 2 feet high and 5 feet wide, enough so that the
veggies could bend over behind and then "grow" on their cue. I had a child on
each end holding it up.
It was pretty cute, the kids learned the song. We sang one line, and then did
it again adding a line, until we finally had the whole song. We traded props
once we had the whole song, and let more kids have their moment in the sun as a
potato! "There are no small actors...!"
INTRODUCTION OF IDEA:
A prophet once said this:
"Where you have a plot of land, however small, plant a garden. Staying close to
the soil is good for the soul."
(Show a picture of Spencer W. Kimball)
When Spencer W. Kimball was our prophet, he felt very strongly that all members
of the Church should learn to work together as families and take care of their
own needs. Many times in general conference talks, he would tell us of the
importance of learning to plant and harvest a garden.
Once for a parade a sister in the church named Mary Jane Davis wrote a song for
the children to sing as they walked in the parade. A small tractor pulled a
"garden" and all the children were dressed as vegetables. Doesn't that sound
fun?
Have you ever wished you could be a potato in the school play? Or a carrot?
It's the actors dream!
Let's see if we can put on a play about this song.
It is called "The Prophet Said to Plant a Garden" SING
First of all I need a room full of beautiful singing voices.
Then I need a farmer, etc...
