Scripture Power
In October 1987 Friend, written by
Clive Romney
Hold up a picture of the Savior, and ask the children to
listen for two things that will help us be like Him. Sing, “Because I want to be
like the Savior, and I can, I’m reading His instructions, I’m following His
plan.” Holding up your scriptures, ask where we read His instructions and where
we find His plan. While helpers hold the picture and scriptures, sing those
lines again. Ask them to listen for what “His word will give to me.” Then sing
the whole line, holding up your scriptures with two hands. Explain that His
words will give us power! Sing the song to that point, and when you sing the
word power, hold up your scriptures with both hands. Tell the children,
“Because I want the power of the scriptures in my life, I’m changing two things.
Listen and tell me what they are.” Sing, “I’m changing how I’ll live, I’m
changing what I’ll be.” Take answers; then sing the lines together. Lead
children in the whole verse. Ask them to count on their fingers how many times
they hear the word power as you sing the chorus. Tell them to alternate
singing words of the chorus with you: for example, they sing, “scripture power”;
you sing, “keeps me safe from sin.” Then have half the Primary sing with you as
you continue to alternate. Bear your testimony of the scriptures.
[Idea from
January 2006 Friend Sharing Time
Suggestion]
One of my favorite sharing
times (10 years ago) was when I made a cardboard "whole armor of God" suit, and
talked about each piece and what it's function was. It has been a very clear
visual for me ever since. I made the whole suit out of cardboard and painted it
with gold spray paint, and had one of the children come up and I dressed him in
it. It looked so cool! I made a helmet out of a plastic rotisserie chicken
container lid, and the bottom of that same chicken container I glued on the
front of the chest piece. There were arm protectors and leg protectors and even
the little skirt thing. Anything you want to glue on, whatever the color
or shape, comes out great when painted with gold spray paint. Noodles, buttons,
rocks, etc. add interesting shapes and designs to your basic cardboard armor
art...I think I used one of the Book of Mormon pictures, maybe the stripling
warriors, to copy the armor.
It is one of my favorite scriptures. It is so visual to think of the "sword of
truth" and how vital it is to have the truth, so you can win your life's
battle. You can fight off many a foe with the sword of truth. Anyway, have fun
with the armor stuff, sword and all. (Idea by Luana Willis / ga05252005

For those that used Scripture
Power Man, do you think the seniors would want to do it? I have an idea of an
activity where they would take turns being Scripture Power Man/Girl, but I
don't know if it would be too babyish. I was thinking of putting the cape on
myself first so they know it's all in fun. SP Man/Girl turns around while we
sing the song. As we sing, we pass around a paper with a scripture on
it. After the singing stops, SP Man/Girl turns back around and has to guess
who has the scripture. If he/she is right, he gets to choose the next SP
"person." If he's wrong, the person with the scripture gets to do it. Either
way, the person that ends up with the scripture reads it. It would be a
scripture with the word "power" in it. (Idea by Jennifer Gould)
Music
Poster and Flip Charts for teaching Scripture Power
1st verse Scripture Power-
Large hand-held mirror with picture of the
Savior on the back
Set of scriptures, “Girl reading scriptures”
Gospel Art Kit # 617)
Gospel Art Kit #605 Young Boy Praying with the
word POWER on the back
Gospel Art Kit # 609³Young Couple Going to the Temple² with the word WORD on
the back
(Show mirror with picture of Savior on it) Who
is this? (Jesus Christ) Who wants to be like him? Listen as I sing to find out
how we can become like him. (sing first line, flipping to the mirror side on I
can.) "Because I want to be like the Savior and I can.”
(Invite someone to come up and hold the
picture/mirror and have them flip it around on ³I can² just like you did.)
(Hold up scriptures) Listen as I sing the first
two lines to see if you can discover what the scriptures have to do with
becoming like the Savior. (sing first two lines, with helper, and open
scriptures on instructions, use finger to scan scriptures on following his
plan.) “I’m following his instructions, I’m following his plan.”
What two things did I sing about in the second
line? (reading His instructions & following His plan.) What are instructions?
(the scriptures) What is his plan? (plan of salvation, found in
scriptures). Invite someone to come up and hold the scriptures and mimic
your actions as you sing the first two lines again. Help them point “I’m
following his instructions, I’m following his plan.”
(Invite three more children to come up and hold
the pictures up with POWER and WORD on them and picture of girl with
scriptures. Instruct them to raise the words them up high when they hear you
sing the appropriate word. Invite the other children to raise their hands when
they hear them, too. (sing third line only.) “Because I want the power
his word will give to me,”
What power are we singing about? (Scripture
Power) Whose word? (the Lord's word)
Now I'm going to sing the last line. Listen to
see if you can tell me how many times I sing the word changing. (whisper in
the last two children¹s ears that they should flip their pictures around when
you tap them.) Sing third and fourth lines together, tapping the child holding
POWER on the first changing (to reveal boy praying) and the child with WORD on
the second changing (to reveal the couple at temple.) “I’m changing how I
live, I’m changing what I’ll be.”
How many times did I sing changing? (Two) See if
you can sing the words power, word, and changing as I sing the last two lines
again. (sing third and fourth lines together.) “Because I want the power
his word will give to me. I’m changing how I live, I’m changing what I’ll be”
So how do these things help us to become like
the Savior? (change how live, change how I’ll be.) Great, now let's see if we
can put it all together. (Sing first verse, helping kids with visuals.) Bear
testimony.
