How
to make the leaf box: My box is 2 feet tall and
1 foot x 1 foot square. I cut 4 rectangular holes in the front to look like
a 4 pane window and then attached a piece of heavy plastic (part of a
plastic bag that a bedspread came in) to the inside. The children seated
could see the leaves blowing around, but the child trying to catch the leaf
was on the back side of the box where I cut a 4 inch diameter hole for them
to stick their hand in. For the blow dryer, I used the "high" setting, but
my blow dryer also has a "cool" setting. So it was cool air on high speed,
so I didn't have a problem with heat. I would tip the blow dryer from side
to side, sometimes in circular motion to get the leaves to fly. The box was
not airtight, so I didn't have a problem with air pressure in the box.
I had to try a few different things for the leaves until I found what
worked. Real leaves were too heavy. Cardstock leaves were too heavy.
Plain construction paper worked the best. In the winter time I put
packing peanuts inside and called them snowflakes. They are very light
so it looked like a blizzard! Lots of possibilities. I put in blank leaves
as well. Sometimes the children had to try more than once to "catch a song".
