Musical Dice
I am using a dice game for singing time
this Sunday. I found a set
of 3 stiff foam dice (about 2" square) at the Dollar Store, one red,
one yellow, one blue. Each of the dice has a different job. One of
them is which song we sing, one is who sings, and the other is
how we sing. I searched the web and found pictures to stick over
the dots. They are so cute! My yellow has "which song". I found a
candy store on line that sells all colors of sprinkles. Each side of
the die has a different colored pile of sprinkles, and one is a rainbow
mix for "you pick". The other colors are assigned to a different song by me.
My red has "who sings" . One side is a group of kids jumping up for
joy (everyone sing), one side is a doll with a pink dress (girls
sing), one side is a black shoe (everyone wearing black shoes sing),
one is a Book of Mormon (whoever brought their scriptures sing), one
side is a boy (boys sing), and then another for everyone with happy
children. My blue has "how to sing". One is a little mouse (whisper
sing),
one is a teddy bear (growly sing), one is a giraffe (stand up to
sing), one is a funny nose and glasses (plug your nose to sing), one
is a little baby (sing with baby voice), one is a boy with hands on
his ears (cover your ears to sing--kids like this one, it sounds
funny!) You throw all 3 dice up and see what combination you get.
I know dice aren't gambling, but in light of President Hinckley's
latest remarks about gambling I was afraid dice would seem too
casino for Primary. I went to a copy shop where they sell sticker
paper by the full 8 1/2 by 11", 60 cents each. I needed 2.
They work like paper in the printer. The surface is the same as
paper, and I wanted to make it more permanent, so I printed the
pictures and then stuck the two sheets back to back and laminated
them. Then when I cut them apart there was laminate on one side!
They stick great to the dice, and are shiny. They don't even look like I
made them! Credit: Luana Willis

You could have a chart with ways to sing corresponding to the numbers, for
example:
1 - loud or boys sing or opera voice
2 - soft girls sing sing every other word
3 - staccato teachers sing cowboy voice
4 - legato brown eyes sing stand up to sing
5 - slow blue eyes sing march and sing
6 - fast everybody sing face the back to sing
It could be fun if you had one side of the chart with one set of ways to sing
and another set of ways to sing on the other side so that you have more options.

Some suggestions on how to use dice....

When I made my dice, I used a 12" x 12" box. Then I
taped a sheet protector on each side & left the top open. Now I can slide
whatever I want into the dice -- but I only have to have one. Credit:

I went to the craft store and purchased a 3x3 Styrofoam cube.. it's perfect! I
printed my ideas on colored paper, cut them out, and attached them using sewing
straight pins, and I bet you could use spray adhesive, too. My cube will
be interchangeable, so I printed signs for:
boys only
girls only
leaders only
sing with eyes closed
face the back of the room
sing like angels
march in place
sing loud
sing soft
whisper
hum
clap
slow
fast
whistle (if you know how)
