I've been wanting to teach "Hum Your Favorite Hymn" for a long time now, but
haven't had a chance, so I'm doing it this "free" Sunday. I bought a giant
stuffed bear from Goodwill ($1.99!) and cut hole in the back of his head, ear to
ear, and inserted PVC pipe. Words (1st verse) will be written on
chalkboard. I'll sing first line, showing the bear with a bandana tied
around his mouth. Ask children what this line of the song means? (discuss)
I'll sing second line, while inserting dirty/stained rags into the bear's head.
Ask children what this means? (discuss) Put bear down and sing chorus.
Then we'll talk about how at the beginning of a new year we like to set goals.
I'll challenge the kids and adult to set a simple goal of singing/humming their
favorite church song every time they feel tempted to make a wrong choice. Ask
kids to think of one of their favorite songs that they could use for this
purpose. Pick a child to come up and stuff rags (clean ones now, with
music notes on the fabric) into the bear's head while we all sing "Hum Your
Favorite Hymn" together. Watch how the bad/ugly thoughts get pushed out by the
good music! Now pick a different child to come up and share their favorite song.
We'll sing that song. Pick a new child to come help stuff rags in the bear's
head, while we sing "Hum..." again, this time with some words erased. Pick a new
child to come share their favorite song - sing that song. Keep alternating "Hum
Your Favorite Hymn" with favorite song, until we run out of time. Those
white foam heads (wig holder) would work too...
