Fun with phone
by Luana Willis

Here's what I did a couple of years ago:

One of the greatest things that you can ever learn is that you can talk to Heavenly Father. You can always turn to him in prayer and he will listen to you, and answer your prayer.

Sing: A Child's Prayer, verse 1 p. 12

(My phone starts to ring in my bag and I dig around finding it. Then I answer. I have asked a friend of mine to call from the hall outside the primary room and read the script.)

Person on the phone:

Hello! How are you? What are you doing? Is _____________there?

Can I talk to him/her? (pass the phone to that person)

Hello_______________! How are you? Are you having fun singing today? Will you tell Sister Willis to have everyone sing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes? Thank you! (the child tells me what the
person on the phone said)

Music Leader:

Yes! We can sing that song! (Get the phone from the child, and give it to someone else to hold it for you, ask them to stand up if it starts to ring again.)

Sing: Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes p. 275 The phone starts to ring and the child holding it stands up, everyone stops singing to see what will happen, the child answers.

Phone:

Hello! Is __________there? Can I please speak to him/her? (pass the phone to that person) Hello! Will you ask Sister Willis to have everyone sing "Row Row Row Your Boat"?

Music Leader:

No. We shouldn't sing that song in Primary. We need to sing a primary song. How about if we sing Love One Another, instead? (Get the phone from the child, ask someone else to hold it for you, ask them to stand up if it starts to ring.)

Sing: Love One Another p. 136 Toward the end of the song the phone starts ringing...

Phone:

Hello! How are you? Are you having fun in primary today? Is ________________ there? Can I talk to him/her? (give phone to person) Hi! You're a great singer! Will you ask Sister Willis if we can sing the closing song now?

Music Leader:

I wanted to sing "I Pray in Faith" for the closing song today. But it isn't time to go yet. So, we will have to wait. Let's sing "Book of Mormon Stories" now instead. (Get the phone from the child, ask someone else to hold it for you, ask them to stand up if it starts to ring.)

Sing: Book of Mormon Stories p. 118... the phone starts to ring....child stands....

Phone:

Hello! You sing so pretty! Is___________there? Can I please speak to him/her? Hello! Will you ask Sister Willis if we can sing your favorite primary song? You can decide what song it is.

Music Leader:

You get to decide what we sing! All of the primary songs are good. What do you think we should sing?

Music Leader:

Talking on the phone is a little like praying. Heavenly Father will hear and answer our prayers, but we have to tell him what we need.  There are different kinds of answers he can give us. Sometimes he will say, "Yes." But not always, sometimes the answer is "No." Sometimes we have to wait to get our prayer answered, and sometimes Heavenly Father will want us to decide for ourselves. He will always help us, but we have to listen for his answer. I know this is true. Let's sing "A Child's Prayer" all the way through. It teaches us important lessons about praying.
