Extra, Extra...
Idea by Karen Taylor / ga
Yesterday was our class presentation day. I never know
if I'm going to have five minutes or 25 minutes on those days, so I have to
be ready with something flexible. So I decided to teach extra verses. I drew
and colored pictures of things with the word "extra" and put them
on the chalkboard. I drew:
*A slice of pizza with "extra cheese"
*A bottle of "extra strength" Tylenol (but only the TYL showed)
*A school paper with an A+ that said "Extra ___" (credit)
*A baseball diamond with a baseball pop-flying out (extra innings)
*A cheeseburger dripping with "extra ketchup"
*A pair of dark glasses next to a roll of movie film (extra in a movie)
*A road with a milepost (go the extra mile)
*A newspaper that said "extra, extra,___ __ ___ __" (read all about it)
You could also use a picture of Extra Gum. For each picture I chose a song
with extra verses and wrote the words on a large school pad, propped on an
easel. I had not taught verses 2 and 3 of An Angel Came to Joseph Smith
because I wanted a small group of soloists for the program. I taught the
second verse of I Want to Live the Gospel. I reviewed all the verses of I
Know that My Redeemer Lives. I taught the second verse of Hum Your Favorite
Hymn. We sang all four verses of "I am A Child of God" and I told them some
of the funny mistakes I thought the words said in it when I was little. (For
many years I wondered why I was singing about how great my knees
were...interesting that the words following that phrase ask for help in
understanding the words before it's too late. My son told me he thought it
said that his knees were gray!) So I had picked other songs just in
case, but the class presentations were the right length and I didn't need
them. I did let them finish guessing all of the riddle pictures before we
sang the last song.
