Earn the Light

by Natalie Breinholt

I am going to have my kids "earn their light" this Sunday. When we start singing time, I am going to turn off the lights and tell them they have to earn it today. We will sing the 1st verse to review.  Next, each class will get a question about the third verse. (the ones out of the children's songbook companion) I also took the visuals out of the CSMP book you can buy at the store. I did this so the kids could see how hard it is to see when it's dark. We will sing line by line and they will answer their questions. When they answer their question each teacher will receive a flashlight (turned on) for their class. Eventually, each class will have a flash light and they will all be able to light the visuals at the front of the room.  After that is done, I was going to turn on the light and have a big picture of Christ at the front of the room and talk about how we can have the light of Christ in our lives.  There are lots of lessons that can be learned from this:

1. We can't see in the dark, we need a light to show us the way. In life, it is the same.

2. Today, they had to earn their light. In life, it is also the same. We earn our light by doing what is right.

3. When all the lights worked together, it was brighter and we could see more. When we surround ourselves with others that have the light, we shine even brighter.

4. I am going to have one of the teachers "choose" not to turn the light on even though the class earned it. We each have our own light and Heavenly Father has given us the choice whether to keep it lit. Some if this might be over the head of the Junior primary, but I've done things like this before and have been amazed at how well the kids understand.
