One of the members in my presidency made up a puzzle that
has pieces that velcro to the front of a sheet protector. Each piece is numbered
and we have popsicle sticks with corresponding numbers on them. We pass around
the container with the popsicle sticks in it and each child gets to draw a
number. We pull off the corresponding puzzle piece and then the child gets a
chance to tell us whether or not they know what the picture is. Then they pass
the bucket to the next person and we continue until someone can guess the
picture. Just pull the picture out for a quick review of the story and then sing
a song to go with the picture. I have loved this activity, and here's why:
1) The children stay in their seats to pass the bucket around, so there's no up
and down or choosing helpers. It just goes around in a circle.
2) It familiarizes the children with the
GAK pictures so when we use them as visual aids later they already
know the story and may have an idea of what it represents for the new song.
3) It gives me a chance to review not just the song, but also to reinforce some
of the gospel principles taught in the songs.
4) The songs can be chosen in advance and given to the pianist so she can be
playing the song in the background while the children guess the picture to help
them figure it out quicker.
5) I can introduce new songs that we don't have time for otherwise with no
expectations on the children to perform well or remember them, it's just for
fun.
6) It's really easy to prep. Just have a presidency member or teacher stick the
pieces back on and slide the next picture in while you're singing and then start
where you left off with the bucket. I've also noticed that the presidency
members started saving any coloring/craft type projects for the end of their
sharing times so the children can stay at their seats and work on those while
they wait for parents also.
