Obedience

Song - Keep the Commandments,
Children's Songbook pg. 146
Scriptures - Proverbs 7:2, Exodus 20:3-17, John 13:34-35
Lesson Ideas -
◦
Read "Obedient Servants of God" (From the Friend Magazine) and read each
riddle
Activity -
You will need 1 marble, 1 large plate and 1 large bowl
Place the marble on the plate and rotate the plate in a circular motion.
Slowly increase the speed of the rotation and attempt to keep the marble on the
plate. This will become increasingly hard and the marble will eventually
careen off the plate.
Now place the marble in the bowl and rotate the bowl in a circular motion.
Slowly increase the speed of the rotation while keeping the marble in the bowl.
The sides of the bowl permit you to increase the speed of the marble without
losing control.
Lesson -
The plate does not have boundaries. However, without boundaries we, like
the marble, may spin out of control. God's commandments are like the sides
of the bowl. At first glance they appear to be barriers. However,
they act as guides that keep us safe and permit us to move more freely through
our lives.
Treat - Cheesy Pretzels (see below). "Do 'knot' forget to be
obedient.
Cheesey Pretzels
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup milk
1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese (2 ounces)
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
Coarse salt
Heat the oven to 400 degrees. Grease a cookie sheet. Cover
breadboard with pastry cloth. Cover rolling pin with stockinet cover.
For convenience, place some flour in a custard cup. Sprinkle the covered
board and rolling pin lightly with the flour and rub it in until it disappears.
Mix flour, milk, cheese, butter, baking power, sugar and salt in a medium bowl
with a fork. Gently smooth the dough into a ball on the covered board.
Knead 10 times. Divide the dough in half. Roll one half of the dough
into a rectangle. 12-inches long and 8-inches wide. Mark and
cut the rectangle lengthwise into eight 1-inch strips. Make each strip
narrower by folding it lengthwise in half. Pinch the edges to seal.
Twist each strip into a pretzel shape and place, seam side down, on the greased
cookie sheet. Beat the egg in a small bowl until the yolk and whites are
mixed. Brush the pretzels with the beaten egg, then sprinkle lightly with
coarse salt. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Lift the
pancake turner to rack to cool.
NOTE: In place of the coarse salt, you can use onion salt or garlic salt
or grated American cheese food.
