Joseph Smith Restored the Church
Shared by Ember Thompson / ga05042007
I am going to tell that story but bring in an old dirty baby
rocking chair that I have and have planned to restore myself someday. I will
tell them what it used to look like when I was young the color, feel etc, and
them say How i want for it to be the same again. What if I paint it purple with
yellow polka dots to match my daughter's room, then I stencil in some giraffes
on it would that make it the same as it was? Is that RESTORING the rocking
chair? No, I will have to sand it and stain it a dark wood stain and wash the
cushion to make is EXACTLY as it was when I was a little girl 20 years ago.
Then I'll make the comparison of how Joseph Smith restored the church to make it
exactly as it was when Christ was on earth as the head of the church. He didn't
change it to make it modern and flashy like the polka dot rocking chair he
followed Christ to make it the same as Christ had it when he left the earth.
I will tell the first vision story and read from JS history and sing the
restoration verse of "This is my beloved son" with children holding pictures to
correspond with words Joseph, 2beings, sun, etc.
Then I will talk about 4 things that make our restored church the same as
Christ's church each will have a picture:
-
Prophets
- picture of President Hinckley (Restored) / picture of Jesus Christ
(Christ's church)
-
Priesthood, modern picture of
ordination (Restored) / picture of Christ using priesthood ordaining his
apostles (Christ's church)
-
Baptism,
modern picture of child in font (Restored) / picture of Christ being
baptized (Christ's church)
-
Temple Worship,
modern picture of temple (Restored) / Picture of ancient temple (Christ's
church)
I will either do a memory match game with each picture and it's modern day
counterpart or put them on the chalk board and have a child draw a line to match
them.
As this is going on I will display 4 old pennies, one for each (priesthood
baptism prophets, temple) and ask the kids to imagine what the pennies looked
like when they were brand new like on the date they have on them. When match the
ancient and modern picture and get it right I will give one child the chance to
RESTORE the penny to how it was when it was first minted by dipping the penny in
vinegar or lemon juice and let them scrub it with an old toothbrush to make it
shiny.
Then I will bear testimony that the true church of Jesus Christ has been
restored for us in our day. It is exact same as what Jesus established when he
was on earth. He is the head of our church today, he leads it through his
prophet Gordon B. Hinckley and called Joseph Smith to restore it for us in the
latter days.
