Survivor Night
by Sandy Parten

We did "Survivor" night.  We started out in the Relief Society room for opening exercises and a spiritual lesson on 'Spiritual Preparedness'.  From there, they were instructed to board the plane, Air Mexico, it was called.  We passed out boarding passes as the sisters left from one door.  They were decorated to resemble an airplane boarding pass, one pass was in gold, and the other pass was blue.  These were the teams, team gold and team blue.  (You can choose any colors, we just had this color fabrics that we could access and use. )  One of the presidency met them at the 'plane door' with a little tiny cup of trail mix.  No one was allowed to take any food from the plane, and the trail mix was an important part of the evening.  (At some point the challenge was to write down on the ingredients in the trail mix and whoever got them all got the points for that challenge).  We had part of the cultural hall sectioned off with the accordion doors.   We had the chairs set up in groups resembling an airplane 3 on one side and 2 on the other with an aisle in the middle.  For the left wall we had the two roller chalk boards and one chair rack  which was covered with a long piece of fabric.   On the fabric and on the other wall we had print outs of and 8/10 sheet of paper that looked like a window with sky and clouds on it.   On the back of each chair we had a brown paper sack that said "In Case of Motion Sickness" written on it and taped to the chair.  The three sisters who were in charge of the tasting table dressed up like airline stewardess and rolled a cart with the food and drink up the 'aisle' and served us.  (After welcoming us to the plane and pointing out the 'invisible' safety features.  The pilot (behind the wall} also welcomed us and did his little 'pilot' talk.  The sisters were roaring and felt very special being served first class on glass party plates.  When the food was finished we 'landed' and exited to the island paradise.  The sisters who were the flight attendants were a hoot.  We had the rest of the cultural hall decorated with flowers and ivy and palm trees made by one of the presidency's children and taped to the walls.  We had a banner for each color team and two poles with the color flag of each team and a small table next to it.  There they chose a name for their teams and tied a strip of their team fabric ether around their heads or on their arms.  One chose the "Golden Girls".  The other 'An Sisters".  {Go figure, we don't have a clue where the second name came from.}  We spent the evening doing different challenges and ended up for 'tribal counsel' where our Enrichment Night leader asked different questions about emergency preparedness.  They were all winners and received a 'Treasure' candy bar, but the team with the most points also received some auction credits for the 'Service Auction'  coming up in a few months. (Oh yes, they were each given one of those party whistles to blow when they knew the answer)  Every one had a blast, and were taught and reminded of some very valuable lessons along the way.  And we also were able to pick out the most competitive sisters of the bunch.   It was a great success.
