Listen to the Still Small Voice

Opening Song: Listen, Listen

Prayer: Assign

Object Lesson: Before Family Home Evening begins, take 4-6 long tube socks and place one small item in each sock.  Choose your items depending on your children's ages.  For example, for younger children maybe a marble, coin, ring, etc.  Anyway, have all six tube socks on the floor.  Choose a child to come forward and put their arm in the sock.  Have them tell everyone what it is, without looking...they can only feel the object.  If your child cannot name the object, ask them to describe how it feels.  Compare this with recognizing the promptings of the Holy Ghost.  When we are familiar with the Spirit, we know what it feels like and can easily recognize it.  However, when we have not had many experiences with the Spirit, we might not easily recognize it.

Lesson:
Explain that as members of Jesus Christ’s Church, we have the same privilege the Apostles did of having the Holy Ghost to help and comfort us. Emphasize that the companionship of the Holy Ghost is one of the greatest gifts that we can enjoy in this life. We can always have his companionship if we are worthy and live righteously.  Tell your family that the Holy Ghost can help us know what to do when we have hard choices to make. Encourage them to follow their feelings from the Holy Ghost. He will help them know what they should do.  Let's learn more about what the Holy Ghost is and what it does. Game: Many of the prophets and leaders in the scriptures had to make the choice as well to listen to the still small voice.  No one forced them, just as no one will force us.  We will have the choice to listen and obey.  Click here to download the pictures for this game.

Prepare beforehand - For each scripture figure, you will need some kind of object to go with that person.  Here are some examples, but there are several options:

Adam and Eve - fruit (forbidden fruit)
Samuel the Lamanite - brick (wall)
Lehi - compass (Liahona)
Ammon and King Lamoni - rope (to show he was tied up)
Anti-Nephi-Lehi's - any type of pretend weapon
Daniel in the Lion's Den - stuffed animal lion (anything representing a lion)

David and Goliath - stone
Captain Moroni - miniature flag
Queen Esther - tiara (anything related to a princess)
Jonah - Anything fish related

Have your children match the pictures with the object.  To be considered a match they also have to explain HOW the person did or did not listen to the Holy Ghost and how the outcome could have been different if they did or didn't obey the promptings they received.

Music - Teach the family the song, "The Still Small Voice" (pg. 106)

Summary - We show courage when we do what is right. It won't always be easy but if we rely on the Lord and pray to ask for His help, he will help us.  Share your testimony.
