I invite the promptings of the Holy Ghost
when I pray, read the scriptures, keep the
commandments and follow the prophet

Have you ever gone to the seashore and built a house out of sand? It’s fun to
mold and shape, but sooner or later, the waves of water creep closer and closer
and wash it away. If you were going to build a real house to live in,
you’d want to build it on a firm foundation of rock or cement so that when the
wind blew, the rain fell, or a flood came, the house would hold fast and you
would be protected and safe.
Many times in the scriptures, gaining a testimony is compared with building a
house upon a rock. A testimony’s foundation of rock is the gospel of Jesus
Christ. In Doctrine and Covenants 11:24 [D&C
11:24], it says: “Build upon my rock, which is my gospel.”
What are some of the things we can do to invite the Holy Ghost in our lives?
All of you will have problems or experiences that test your beliefs. These are
like the rains, floods, and storms that can beat upon a house. If you have not
built your testimony upon the rock of the gospel, when problems or temptations
come, you might decide to give up, and, just like a house built upon the sand,
your testimony might be destroyed.
If the weatherman were to tell us tonight to prepare for a hurricane, what are
some of the things we would want to do to prepare ourselves?
(i.e. boarding up their houses,
getting extra food and water, moving to higher ground, etc.)
Show the children the following object lesson "Hurricane in a bottle."
Hurricane in a bottle - You'll need a tall plastic jar (pop bottle), 4 to
6 small balls of aluminum foil, clear liquid soap, water, blue food coloring.
Place a teaspoon (5ml) of clear liquid soap in your plastic container. Drop into
the jar 3-4 vary small pieces of aluminum foil rolled into balls. The foil
should be folded and pressed so that it will sink. Fill the jar to the top with
water. Add 1 to 2 drops of blue food coloring. Rotate the container and a
swirling effect should be produced. It may take some practice. Set the container
up on the table and watch. The force of the foil at the bottom should keep the
water in motion. The action resembles the motion set up as circular rotations of
air in the atmosphere form a tornado.
We also have spiritual hurricanes. How can we prepare for them? (read our
scriptures, pray, listen to Holy Ghost, follow the prophet, etc.)
Hold up a seashell. Ask for someone to come up and
listen to the ocean. They
will have to be quiet and still as they try and hear it. You could have
the Primary Pianist play some prelude music while the child is trying to listen
for the ocean. Then have others talk as they try to listen. You really have to
be attuned to "hear" the sound. This is also
true with the Holy Ghost. We have to be quiet and still to hear its
promptings...but we have to become aware of how the Holy Ghost speaks to us
individually.
Have the children sit on the floor in the middle of the room. Sing the
first verse of “The Wise Man and the Foolish Man” (Children’s Songbook,
p. 281). Explain that the rock they are singing about is the Savior, His
teachings, and His commandments, which we find in the scriptures (see
Matt. 7:24–27). When the people in the scriptures followed the Savior and
kept His commandments, they were blessed. When they sinned and would not repent
or keep the commandments, they were not blessed and were often destroyed. Have
the children stand. Say that if the people in the story you will tell them were
blessed by the Lord, they should hold their hands high. If the people were
wicked and were destroyed, the children should sit on the floor. Alternate
singing the verses to the song “The Wise Man and the Foolish Man” with telling
stories from the scriptures. Possible stories are: City of Enoch (Moses
7), Noah’s family (Gen.
6–8:16), Daniel (Dan.
1–6), Israel crosses the Red Sea (Ex.
14), Pharaoh’s army (Ex.
14), Ammonihah (Alma
14–16).
Testimony - Share your
testimony of the importance of inviting the Holy Ghost in your life.
Other optional ideas -
- Tell the story of the wise man and the foolish man using
this clipart of the story.
