My faith in Jesus Christ grows when I hear the apostles and prophets testify of Him
by Melanie Day

Obtain six pictures: Noah, Isaiah, Lehi, Daniel, Samuel the Lamanite, and the current

Church President.  Hold the first picture. Identify the prophet, talk about his picture, and proceed similarly with the other pictures.

1. Noah: Told the people to repent and live the commandments or Heavenly Father

would punish them.

2. Isaiah: Foresaw the birth of the Savior.

3. Lehi: Preached to the people and told them to follow the commandments or Jerusalem would be destroyed.

4. Daniel: Interpreted Nebuchadnezzar’s dream when no one else could.

5. Samuel the Lamanite: Foretold the birth of Christ to the Nephite people.

Tell the children that these prophets were very spiritual men. They loved the Savior and tried to help the people learn about him. Sometime the people listened to what the prophet said and sometimes they did not. When a prophet said something would happen, it happened. Heavenly Father helped them know about future events. This is called revelation.

Ask, who is our prophet today? (Show the Church President’s picture.)  What has he

asked us to do? (Read the Book of Mormon, obey our parents, etc.) Tell your family that

when we hear a prophet speak to us it’s as though Heavenly Father is speaking to us. If we obey the words of a prophet, we will find happiness in all that we do and we will be able to follow Jesus.

(Idea taken from Deseret Book's Website by Beth Lefgren and Jennifer Jackson, Sharing Time, Family Time, Anytime, [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1992], p.20–21.)

ACTIVITY: Divide the children into nine “families.” Remember that families are all different sizes. Write the principles (faith, prayer, and so on) on small pieces of paper, and place them in a basket. Have each "family" draw a word. Instruct the families to act out the principle. Give the children time to prepare.

For example, to demonstrate work, the children could pantomime sweeping the floor. Post word strips of the principles listed.  Use the index in the Children’s Songbook to find a song that relates to the principle, and write the page number on the back of the corresponding word strip. (For principles not listed in the index, use a related topic; for example, use “service” in place of “compassion,” “reverence” in place of “respect.”) Invite the groups to act out their word for the rest of the Primary. Have the children guess what principle each family is illustrating. When the correct principle is guessed, remove the word strip from the board, and sing the song listed on the back.  Explain that pantomiming a principle is fun, but actually living that principle is even better.

VIDEO Watchmen on the Tower : An analogy teaches that living prophets warn us of coming dangers. Includes excerpts from talks by President Gordon B. Hinckley and Elder Henry B. Eyring  (Video Clip 12) 4:29 min.

HANDOUT:  Give each child a blank bingo card.  Have them write words (or draw pictures) of things they might hear in Conference.  Then they use that template as they listen to conference.  You could also send them home with a bag of jelly beans or similar candy to use as tokens for the bingo board).

SUMMARY: Challenge the children to think of one thing they can do this week to strengthen their own families.  Share your testimony of the prophet and His apostles.
