Conference Sharing Time

by Shelley Davies / ga10062006 from Carrie Griffith

We began by singing the following verse of "Follow the Prophet," a verse our song leader made up specifically pertaining to
President Hinckley.

Next we sang a made-up prophets/apostles song, to the tune of
Ten Little Indians. With the pictures of each First Presidency member and Apostle taped to a board (15 in all), our song leader pointed to each picture as we sang: "Hinckley, Monson, Faust and Packer, Perry, Nelson, Oaks and Ballard, Wirthlin, Scott, Hales and Holland, Eyring, Uchtdorf, Bed-nar." We sang this a few times, starting off slowly the first time...then singing faster each time to see how quickly we could learn their names. These same pictures stayed on the board while we did the following activity:

Under several of the names, she placed separate strands of yarn that were each attached to a simple hand-drawn picture she placed elsewhere in the room. She'd have a child come to the front of room, choose a picture of one of the apostles (or First Presidency) that had a strand of yarn hanging from it, follow that piece of yarn and locate the picture (such as a seed--which signified "faith") and discuss what that apostle (or prophet) had talked about in Conference this past week. We then sang a song that also pertained to the given talk. These 'pictures' were all very simple, cut out shapes from construction paper:

Elder Bednar: spoke about loving others and not letting ourselves get offended; yarn attached to a heart; sing "Love One Another", p. 136.

Elder Perry: spoke about Plan of Salvation; yarn attached to a cloud; sing "I Lived in Heaven," p. 4.

Pres. Monson: spoke about faith; yarn attached to picture of a seed; "Faith," p. 96

Elder Hales: spoke about importance of the scriptures and shared some Book of Mormon stories; yarn attached to black book that resembles the scriptures; sing "Book of Mormon Stories," p. 118

Elder Faust: spoke about obeying the commandments; yarn attached to CTR shield (without the "CTR" printed on it); sing "Dare To Do Right," p. 158.

The spirit was so strong in our meeting that day, and the kids loved it.  If time allows, you could talk about other talks as well. The Conference talks can all be found at
www.lds.org if you'd like to think of some of your own ideas.
