My family can follow Jesus Christ
Idea by Tara Tarbet / ga07152007
I only did this sharing time in Senior Primary. I think
it would be a little too much for Junior. Maybe you can tone it down a
little for younger kids.
Each child will need scriptures (that is a given in our Primary-especially
when I am doing
Sharing Time), each class needs a piece of paper and a pencil (for taking
notes)
I took 10 pictures from the
Gospel Art Kit (GAK) and put them up on the bulletin board
along with 1 Nephi 19:23 (And I did read many things unto them which were
written in the books of Moses; [and] that which was written by the prophet
Isaiah; for I did liken all scriptures unto us,
that it might be for our profit and learning.)
Here are the pictures I chose to put on the board:
313 Two Thousand Young Warriors
301 Lehi's Family Leaving Jeruselem
218 The Good Samaritan
307 King Benjamin Addresses His People
311 The Anti-Nephi-Lehies Burying Their Swords
305 Enos Praying
304 Lehi and His People Arrive in the Promised Land
220 The Prodigal Son
303 Nephi Subdues His Rebellious Brothers
302 The Liahona
We discussed what 1 Nephi 19:23 meant (line by line so that they really
understood it)
I gave them one minute to decide as a class on their 1st and 2nd choice of
pictures. Then
each class had someone come and choose one picture. (Hopefully they each
would get one
of their "top two" stories that way. I try as often as possible to give the
classes/children
choices instead of assignments because they seem to be more willing to do
more of the
rest of the assignment/activity that way.)
Their assignment was to discuss in their class for 5 minutes how they can
liken that story
to their families, how that story can help their family follow Jesus Christ
in faith. They were
encouraged to read the story from the scriptures and not just read the story
on the back
of the picture. Each class was given a pencil and piece of paper so they
could take notes.
After 5 minutes each class sent a representative (or 2) up to tell what
story they chose
(just the title) and what they learned from the story that would have direct
application to
their family.
I encouraged them to read and study the scriptures, not just "read their
daily page" and to
try to find kernel of truth that could grow throughout their day and their
life. They are
active members of their family and they have the opportunity to make their
family more
wonderful each day, or they can make life in their family difficult.
Hopefully they will
choose to help their family "Follow Jesus Christ" more often.
