Family History Scroll, make one! (April 2005 Friend)
Once I had several muslin rag dolls made and gave each girl a doll to dress (or
paint on clothing) in clothing that one of their ancestors might have worn, then
they also brought a story about that ancestor and a food dish that that ancestor
might have eaten. It was a really fun activity and the girls really learned a
lot and this started a love of family history within our Young Women group.
I also did it in Family Home Evening with my own kids and it was very meaningful
when my kids would call their grandparents looking for unique stories or
different ancestors to present. (Idea shared by Cindi Klumm /

Family History Family Home Evening
For a
long time we had a huge paper chain family tree extending back 5
generations. Each person was either dark or light pink or blue (showing
gender and whether or not individual Temple ordinances were complete) and
each family group was linked by either a black or white paper link
(whether or not the family had been sealed). Whenever my
husband and I went to the
Temple, the kids helped us swap out links to show the progress we had
made. But eventually, all we had left were the dark and black links for
living family members who were not Church members. We made the original
link-tree as a FHE project. It was pretty messy (you couldn't just look
at it and see the relationships), but if you found one particular link you
could definitely follow the chain around to see how they were related to
others. (Credit Unknown)
We have
an occasional FHE dedicated to an ancestor or ancestral family
group. Make a timeline of their life showing their personal activities as
well as historical factoids to put it in perspective (what was going on in
US history? What inventions were new?). Show a sample of their
handwriting. (Credit Unknown)

The Years go By, Chronicle Yours! (2007 BYU Women's Conference) - a "one
page-ten topic" format to record the family's (or individuals) main events of
the year. Photo's are nice-but optional. We will also have suggestions for
computer technology/programs that simplify the process and suggest ways to bind
the pages eventually into a family history book.

How many relatives do you have?
If you've been on the internet for any length of time
you've received the questionnaire e-mails. They are usually labeled "getting to
know you." Don't delete them unanswered. Fill it out and print it out and
add it to your autobiography file. How many times have you wanted to know
details of an ancestors life and couldn't find a clue? Your descendants may not
get to know you in your lifetime, but they will have glimpses of you and your
life. (Idea by Deborah Brent)
