Sharing Time on Faith
by Amy

I started out talking about how when scientists wanted to find out the truth behind an idea they had - let's say when scientists wanted to find out how to create electricity or the laws of gravity etc.  They had to test it or experiment.  It is the same thing when we want to find out the truth in gospel things - we need to test them.

In Alma we read...(Alma 32: 27 ) But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words.

So today boys and girls we're going to talk about ways we can experiment upon Heavenly Father's words and help our faith grow.

I then had spoons with a small dot of gel food coloring in the bottom and then they were covered with baking soda.  I had
about 9 spoons.  I had clear cups of water and one cup had vinegar - I made sure the vinegar cup was used last.  I said today we're going to be physical scientists and spiritual scientists.  I'm going to ask for a volunteer to come up and pick a spoon and stir it in a cup and we'll see what happens.

I had a lab coat and protective glasses and gloves that the kids put on - I said scientists prepare for their experiments by putting on these types of things and we can prepare for our spiritual experiments by praying, and by having the Holy Ghost with us.

Before primary I had prepared 10 papers - each paper had a beaker on it - and they had colored construction paper cut to fit the beaker - so that the construction paper looked like the contents of the beaker - made it look like the beaker was 1/2 full of orange water or red water etc.  I only glued the construction paper across the top so that you could lift it and when you lifted it revealed the results.

So for instance the first child came up, picked a spoon, and we discovered green paper - so then the child picked a paper that had a beaker with green paper - we lifted it and we found tithing.  We then talked about how we test this principle by doing it, we pay our tithing, and then what are the results - well you can have a scripture ready that talks about the blessings of tithing, you can have a story ready to share about the blessings of paying your tithing, you can say our faith grows when we see that Heavenly Father's promises are true - he does bless us when we pay our tithing - then you can sing a song about tithing.

Other beakers could say - Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy, Following the Prophet, Obeying Parents, Loving one another, serving others, sharing the gospel, word of wisdom, etc.

Mention that sometimes the spiritual results are a calm warm reassuring feeling inside that lets us know we made a good choice.

Then for the final spoon - use the vinegar - it will bubble up and really cause a reaction.  Tell them that sometimes the spirit is quick and strong and powerful in giving us an answer.  Sometimes he knows we need to get a real clear answer and boom we know that what we're about to do is right or wrong.

Okay that was what I did - of course concluding with my testimony about how wonderful it is to see your faith grow and learn the truths Heavenly Father wants us to know and do.
